Rug size help needed!

We need a rug for our dining room, and I can't decide between two sizes.

The table that I would like to get is 82 inches long and seats six. It can be extended to 104 inches to seat eight people. We would probably only extend it 5-6 times a year.

So, should I get an 8x10 rug because the table will usually be set up for six people, or should I get the 9'6"x13' rug, so when we do have the table extended, all of the chairs will still be able to be on the rug?

The room is 16 feet by 12 feet, and we will also have a buffet and display cabinet in the room.

As soon as I can finalize this decision, I can order our new rugs! I just can't decide which one would be better for the dining room!

I would get one that accommodated the dining set when it was extended. When it wasn't, then I would enjoy seeing more of the pattern. I love rugs!

I have a 9'6" x 13' in my dining room which accommodates chairs with all extensions in the table. I definitely would get that size if I were you. As alex9179 said you will see more pattern which is great and there is nothing more annoying than when the rug is too small when you are moving chairs in and out to sit down no matter how many times a year you do it.

Esmaili Rugs and Antiques, Inc. ingrid_vc so. CA zone 9 I like the light colored one best I think... and I definitely want a modern pattern. I found a local retailer who can do custom size rugs (even custom variations of rug patterns in store with colors we match / pick out). I checked this one out. Was thinking I could even change the black to blue? But I kind of like the black for contrast. Or is that too many colors? Or should I go for more COLOR? I need COLOR IN MY LIFE! But, I could do that with pillows, art, and accessories..... ? I am planning on doing automatic shades, not drapes, in this room.. prob neutral so won't add much color. Also, don't mind the outdoor furniture that's all bunched up against the window... and I just put the orange pillows on the sofa to try and get some color going for reference. You all are so much help!

If you go to a big carpet/flooring store they will have remnants that you can have cut to a size that is exactly what you want. Or they can do this with any of the carpet they sell. They bind the edges and it looks like any area rug. I personally would get it cut to go from the outside edges of your side tables (which looks like it is in between the two sizes you have illustrated). The other dimension should leave a path from the door across the room and start just a couple inches from the front legs of the side tables (this is only slightly different than what you've shown). It really might be better to get the furniture in place before you order something so you can be 100% sure of the measurements as you will not be able to return a custom product.

So Sorry, But The strict rectangle rug shape on a diagonal makes NO sense unless the furniture angles with it. Looks exactly as what happened, The rug size not suited to space. Atleast you are not using a rug with any pattern since IMO a pttered rug hidden 75% by a bed is not a great idea. I think for your space I would go large enough for the night tables to sit on the rug . I am not sure what you mean by the wall so maybe explain that . I rarely use full rugs in bedrooms I do like rugs on either side of the bed for feet in the morning but I guess I would so go bigger if you are doing a rug

I was all set to buy the larger one, and then the salesman mentioned that sometimes people buy the rug that fits how the table is set up for 90-95% of the time. After he told me that, I just couldn't decide which one to do!

I also would get the larger size if you room can accomodate it. I hate a rug that your chair slides off of when you sit.

Hmmm. I'm just going to have to disagree with your salesman then. Whether you use the table without extensions 9% or 99% of the time doesn't make any difference. When you do have the table at full length with the larger rug you will not have the problem of the darn chairs catching on the rug edges when pulling them in and out to sit down and being off the rug when sat in. Plus you get the additional benefit of seeing more of the beautiful rug when the table is smaller without extensions in. It doesn't look odd at all with the larger rug and I for one have never regretted having the 9'6" x 13' rug. It never even occurred to me to get a rug smaller than what I needed for the chairs with the table at full length. JMHO and experience in my dining room.

In addition to helping the chairs move easier, a larger rug just looks nicer. If you were doing a jute or seagrass one, I can see weighing the pros and cons.

A rug has the potential to be an art piece, though. If you think it's gorgeous, why would you choose to see less of it?

i have a large DR rug that fits the table when the leaves are all in... but, i definitely prefer the way it looks on the large rug when the table is extended... so i generally leave all of the leaves in... (that way i don't have to store the leaves either!)
