Things you thought of after your home was built
Comments (27)BIG ONE that I've never seen: -Pay a little extra for a quieter bathroom exhaust fan, especially in the powder room. Ours, and those in almost every house I see, is so loud that anyone would be embarrassed to use it, or leave it on afterwards. Others: -Framing in wall next to where desk is to hold up desk -Having air returns and ducts in conditioned space (never asked about it) -Make sure can lights are sealed or in conditioned space (climbing into attic this weekend to fix) -Have gas fireplace box protrude into room, and put bookshelves next to it, rather than have it bump-out into the outside, where it is difficult to insulate. Although we plan this to be our only house until our little ones are grown, my wife smiles at me when I discover problems and reminds me that this isn't our "forever" house (that's heaven, y'all). :)...See MoreBuilt in for Roomba? Comments (13)Why don't I think I want a full-fledged vacuuming system? Because I HATE vacuuming. Hate it with the red-hot fire of ten thousand suns. I despise it. While a built-in system might alleviate some of my hatred, I don't see it disappearing. I'm planning to have little carpet in our new house -- just an area rug for the living room and MAYBE carpet in the bedrooms. I can't see building in a whole system for that small bit -- not when a Roomba can do it for me. In contrast, I don't mind sweeping; thus, I'm thinking I'd like to have the kick-open dustpan thing . . . but I know I will not vacuum unless forced to do so. What's the phrase? Know thyself. As for toe-spaces under cabinets. No, my Roomba is too tall to fit under my current cabinets. However, I'm not sure I want toe-kicks in my new house at all. I am not quite 5' tall, and I'm investigating the idea of omitting them altogether -- I definitely wouldn't mind my cabinets being a few inches shorter. I've been reading on the internet, and people seem to be very split on the subject of whether these are necessary! I don't expect any electronic gadget to last forever, but it can always be replaced. However, this is a good point: Nothing of this sort should be built for one specific machine; rather, it should be built with the idea that it'll eventually be replaced or upgraded. A toe-kick drawer kind of thing was what I had in mind, but I couldn't find such a thing online -- do you know where you saw the picture? The only things I saw were kind of like curtains (or dust ruffles) that hid the machine. As for pushing her own way out (well, I'm not sure whether mine is male or female -- we're not that well aquainted yet) . . . no. The start button is on top of the machine, so I would need to pull it out and push the button. That is a very good point and one I must puzzle through....See Moregreat ideas for built in place for shoes and slippers
Comments (12)I was hung up on shoes, too, prior to our recent remodel we were always tripping over shoes. And I won't lie - just because you build it, the family still isn't trained to use it! Anyway, we put in two tilt out drawers that hold shoes. I got the idea from some tilt out shoe chests I had seen in catalogs by Home Decorators Collection. Here is a sample of one on their website. My cabinet maker wasn't too thrilled about making them, but he finally did and I am finding them very handy! Our cabinet is about 21-22" deep and about 20" high. The width of the drawer can be whatever you have room for. Like this one, it has one divider and even my husbands tennis shoes fit. Boots not so much. http://www.homedecorators.com/P/Mission-Style_Tilt-Out_Shoe_Storage_Cabinet/210/ Good Luck! By the way, I like the idea of slide out toe kick shelves --- wish I'd thought of that one and explored it a bit!...See MoreLaundry Chute of sorts Idea
