I think we need more information because there are a lot of ways you can go with this: Simple hoop, old fashioned railed frame (easy to make yourself, but takes up a lot of space), free-standing floor hoops, free-standing roller frames. What you decide to use is probably dependent in some part on what size quilts you plan to handquilt--large or small. Also, have you done much handquilting? If not, please try it on some small projects (an embroidery hoop can be used for these) before you invest in a large frame. I have an expensive floor hoop that I use-I got it from a neighbor for $25--but I don't think it's sturdy enough for a large quilt. Right now I'm using it for an applique project.

I've done small to large on a hoop--don't like the standing hoop, but you may. I like to relax in my overstuffed rocker and hold the hoop for the most comfortable position. I agree with Annie, try the hoop before you invest in frames. As you may know from an earlier thread, I only use frames for laying in. Carole

i dont use a frame or a hoop, i find that as long as your fabrics are well basted or tied down using quilters safety pins then your fabric does not move and you can happily sit and quilt in your rocker.

Annabelle--Are you able to do a rocking stitch without a hoop? I used to quilt without a hoop, but I found that I could work faster with a rocking stitch, so I taught myself to work that way instead.
