hand quilting frames

I'm brand new on the list.

I'm just finishing my first queen size quilt top and want to use a standing frame to hand quilt it, but I'm not sure how to choose one, as there aren't any quilt shops near me with displays of hand quilting frames.

Does anyone have one they love, or any advice on choosing one?

Here's the hoop I have and really like.
Mostly because I am very short & it's extremely adjustable. I love the swivel too. It folds away
for storage.
I got so lucky & had a 40% off coupon from a local craft
store, it was a great deal!

Welcome to the forum Coleen! Wish I could be of some help, but I use a hoop and quilt on my lap. I will be watching to see what others use. I'm only on my second quilt, and they have both been lap size. Someday I'll make something bigger and want to put it in a floor frame.

You're ahead of me because I have a row to go on the top, and don't have the rachets/rachets stops on yet. I do have the couch pushed back and the frame in the middle of the living room! I see what you mean about the pictures in the instruction book, but it seems like if this was a frame that actually eliminated needing some extra backing/batting in case of shifting they would be stating that specifically as a big marketing point. I got mine from KathyQuilts, and her site has a picture of a loaded frame that appears to show a traditional amount of extra batting gathered inside the bungee clamp close-up. I've seen long arms set up and they always have extra backing and batting all around the edges. I hope someone answers that's completed quilts on the EZ3. Hand quilting on a standing frame

I have a standing frame and have hand quilted 2, 1 a king, and the other a queen sized quilt. Having done that I must say that I prefer to quilt on a round hoop in my lap which is what I am doing at the moment. I found it more difficult on the tighter quilt but the greatest problem was with reversing my needle and stitching towards myself. It took a lot of practice to develop that technique. It has been a while since I used the frame but I believe that it required more coordination between the hands as the needle was passed. There are probable others that can answer your question with more current input but I think practice is probably one factor in developing a new technique.

How do you mark your quilt for hand quilting?

Always test everything before using it on your quilt. I tried the PressNSeal for hand quilting some floral designs. To draw the design onto the PNS, I tried ballpoint pen, Sharpie pen, and also some of the lighter color markers. The problem I had, even though I let them all dry for 48 hours first, the color of the marker kept rubbing off onto my thread. The thread got darker and darker. When I took it out, there were dots on the fabric. Using it as a stencil might work with removable markers, but I'm not sure if chalk would stay on the fabric when you pull off the PNS? BlueBars

Even if I had enough space for a large floor frame, I don't think I would enjoy the restrictions of having to quilt in different directions, like away from me. For many years I have enjoyed Hinterberg hoops, both floor and lap models. I ilke being able to turn the work around or at any angle as needed. Hinterberg has impeccable quality and craftsmanship and super customer support.
If you can find a local vendor, try one out to find just the right size for you.

Coleen, I'm with Blue on Hinterberg. I built their floor frame kit (easy if you have any tools and building ability at all... or a hubby/SO who would like to build it)... I did mine myself...built, stained, and pastewaxed in a weekend. I also use their floor hoop... really nice as it's portable and you never have to quilt away. I also sit in a LaZBoy at times and just use my original 18 in. hoop (like $6.00???)

I have a Hinterberg Homestead frame but don't keep it set up. It is so big and I really don't have room for it. I have quilted a kingsized and a queensized quilt on it and liked the fact that I didn't have to baste the layer togeather. I have mostly hand quilted in my lap with a large hoop. Recently I have been either trying to free motion or send them out to a long arm quilter. Jayne
