Painting Cabinets White

I have oak cabinets, lots of them! I have a simple white tile back splash and dark brownish/black Corian countertops with Black appliances. The floor thoughout the house and kitchen is oak wood. I am thinking of painting the cabinets white...Do you all think the white would go with the rest? I am seeing a lot of this look now and love. Advice appreciated!

How to embed pictures in your post

1. Open a free account at Photobucket.com or a similar 'storage site'.

2. Move pictures off your hard drive or camera by clicking 'download' and identifying the picture(s) you want to move from your camera or hard drive.

3. Once the pictures are there in Photobucket, do the Happydance part 1.

4. Select and resize a picture, by clicking on 'edit' above the picture, then 'resize', then 'website' for medium or 'message board' for large. (skip this step and your picture will post giant and make everyone reading the thread have to scroll to the right forever. Not cool.)

5. Under your picture, find and copy the HTML tag in the box marked HTML (looks like >ahref =...).

6. Back at your post, copy that tag right into the body of your message.

7. Check the preview to be sure the picture is there and sized OK. Do the happy dance part 2

There is someone on this forum that did a beautiful job painting their oak cabinets white. I'm sure if you look through the Finished Kitchen Blog and find several kitchens that were originally oak but now painted white and many of those are like yours, with black accents. (if you've never checked that out just put that in the search bar at the bottom to get to it).

I painted mine with a girlfriend over a 3 day weekend. They were old cheap oak cabinets. I scrubbed them with tsp, primed them with 2 coats of kilz to cover all the oak grain and then painted them with 2 coats of cabinet coat paint I bought at the local ace hardware. We couldnt get new hardware to line up in the old holes so I spraypainted the brass hinges with white rustoleum . They turned out great. I did them 3 years ago and the paint has stayed very white and crisp and and easy to wipe down.

i searched on the painting forum as well for some information. it seems like there are all different types of paint you can choose from (different primers, different paints - oil, latex, water based and even different finishes and glazes - and of course there are all different types of brands to choose from! my head was spinning!) i also noticed there are different methods of painting - brush, roller and sprayer. i think that we'll end up using a sprayer since i don't want to see any brush strokes. i'm actually really curious about ALL of the steps involved - stripping, sanding, primer and then of course the painting....it seems like there are many steps involved :) i'd also like to know how well the cabinets wear after painting....i painted some wood furniture years ago when i was a teenager and it chipped and peeled rather quickly but then again i probably did it wrong and used the wrong products! LOL i was really hoping i could find a thread where people posted photos of their painted cabinets as well as a list of all the products they used. maybe i'm not looking hard enough? if there is one can someone give me a link? i'm still new to this site and i am trying to find my way around!

Yes, and you can make it. I believe the recipe is simply flat latex paint and plaster of Paris in some ratio. But as far as YouTubes go, many of them feature the Annie Sloan brand.

I’m interested in this as well. I’m DIY’ing our kitchen cabinets and the SW rep sold me on the Pro Industrial waterbased alkyd urethane. I’m now having second thoughts :( My bro-in-law sprayed lacquer ~5 years ago on his cabinets and they still look great. He had access to a an offsite shop to spray and I have heard not to spray lacquer at home?
