how to cut baseboard for bullnose corner

Hi,

I have read a couple of threads regarding this procedure but they were not detailed enough for me.

I have installed baseboard and crown molding before but just never done bullnose cuts for baseboards or crown molding.

can someone provide me with a step by step on bullnose baseboard cuts (3/4" bullnose). Crown molding would be nice as well.

What are bullnose cuts? Are you talking about returns? This is where you return the baseboard or crown back to the wall.

On the baseboard/bullnose,you run your baseboard each side up to the radius of the bullnose at a 22-1/2 degree cut. This leaves you a filler that you scribe in at 22-1/2 degree cuts both sides.I find it best to glue these fillers in as they are small,and a nailer usually will split it out, even if you pilot drill before nailing.

If you have a compound mitre saw,the crown moulding cuts for inside and outside corners are best figured by cutting the back side. If you dont have a compound mitre saw, but a standard power or hand mitre saw, there are jigs you can purchase that hold the crown at the angle of the crown you are working with and allows you to face cut the piece similar to a straight forward 45 degree cut.

I dont have any links for you, but there are sources for crown moulding work such as books,videos,etc., as it's a fairly difficult project for a first timer.Maybe others out there can refer you to some educational sources.

The base board is easy with a little trial and error as well as a little patience.

While I was thinking about how this would look with a bullnose tile, I realized I hadn't tried to visualize how the tile would lay out on the tub alcove wall. Here's my guess at how it could be done: If we used a bullnose on the left edge, where this wall meets the wall behind the door (see diagram several posts up in this thread), and on the right side cut tile to the same 3" wide size, that comes to about 32.5 inches (with grout) for this approximately 32" wall. That seems to me like it would work well. I know the "13x13" tiles may not be precisely 13" -- I have to go check their exact size -- but is this the right idea? Or would you lay it out differently? If we do it as shown, that means dead center of this wall is a grout line, and dead center is where I would think I would also center the items on this wall: (from bottom to top) tub spout, pressure balance valve trim, grab bar with adjustable showerhead. Is there any negative to having these items centered on/cut into the line between two tiles? Thanks, as always, for the advice and guidance! -- Eric

This cut is the exclusive oeuvre of the Fein Multimaster (and its imitators). No other tool can cut just the baseboard and leave everything else undisturbed. A japanese saw can work if you are willing to either cut the drywall behind (pipes? wires?) or be content to snap off the remaining uncut wood at the inside floor/wall corner that the blade just can't get to. You need a japanese saw with teeth all the way to the end of the blade. A very sharp chisel can beaver its way through, but the repeated mallet blows will probably crack the drywall. Casey

A butt joint is where one piece of wood meets another. There is usually no mitre at a butt joint. A mitre is where one piece is cut at an angle to match up with the next piece....as in inside corners, outside corners, etc. Butt joints are usually seen in siding where one long board meets another because they don't make 30 foot boards. You don't want to use Alex Plus. It's the worst in the DAP line. Caulk is cheap. You may as well buy the best tube. DAP elastomeric Dynaflex 230 is their best. You don't need a backer rod. The gap they are talking about is the visible gap on the top of what you are caulking...in your case 3/16". You don't really care how deep the gap goes...your concern is just caulking the top of it. It takes about 6 months to a year for caulk to look dirty. Clear or white is fine...I prefer white.

Annz Looks nice! I like the idea of a quarter round that matches the floor will have to look into it. My DH says your radius looks smaller than ours? we have 3/4 corner bullnose. When we cut the 22.5Â° angles or filler piece was almost twice as long as yours (I think)? Sierraeast...thanks for the link...had been to trimtex site too. I found one bullnose adaptor at a local moulding company (wood and supposed to match our trim, butit did not match the baseboard exactly...have to look into the trim tex products I guess but I bet they wont match...not too thrilled about their "stand alone corner" idea.

You can try and find matching molding that is curved (or flexible enough), miter as many pieces as you want (at least one extra at 22.5 degrees but you can use as many as you care to try fitting), laminate up a curved piece, or return the molding to the wall.

It is one of the problems with bullnosed corners and moldings and a reason the two do not get along well.

Even the 22.5 joint with a single extra piece leaves gaps at the top of the baseboard that look bad. A 'clunky' corner.
