You probably don't want to hear from me, because I agree with your dh for 2 reasons...I do think it'd be tough to get a dark floor color that wouldn't compete with and create a very dark overall feel with the dark burgundy cabs...But also, we have Brazilian Cherry floors, which I didn't think were that dark on the samples, but are too dark for me in practical, everyday life. Any of the slightest scratches look white...and these come from anyplace furniture sits on it, anything is moved across them with any tiny bit of sand on it, and from normal movements of pets and family. Also, the dust and pet hair seems to be magnified. They just never look clean...and look dirtier than a lighter floor might. Just a heads up so that you might not be disappointed later, like I am.

You might consider something like oak with a darker stain put on so that the grain and some color variation is allowed to show through. This could be a happy medium for you and your dh on the lightness and darkness issue, would allow the dark, solid burgundy cabinets to stand out, and solve the dirt and scratch-hiding issues, too.

We actually just had a hardwood floor fellow over who told us it was possible to save our old oak hardwood flooring in our living room and add new to the kitchen area and then stain it all to match. He is writing up an estimate for that and also, just in case, an estimate if we need to put in all new hardwood.

I appreciate your honesty too regarding your Brazilian cherry floors and their upkeep etc. Lots for me to think about and I guess I will try to be happy with my dark cabinets and a lighter colored floor.

I still know I will have some trouble figuring out just what color will be good with our cabinets but I can't be the only one with dark burgundy cabinets so somewhere out there will be a color of flooring I like.

I would say go for a med mahogany, cherry or a colonial pine. It's tough because very different store will have different samples and then what you order may not be the exact colour as the sample! But I would stick to red tones or warm tones you could go with a dark walnut as well. Good Luck!! I know it's a tough process.

I hope you can find photos. It might be difficult, as dark burgundy cabinets aren't all that common, and pics you find might not have the floors you want to see. But I think you could have a lot of options for color...I could see a chocolate or espresso color on the oak being pretty, and with some lightness showing through, not being bad at all with the burgundy.

here are pictures of both our kitchen floor and adjoining sunrrom floor. We used alfa lux porcleain tile in the kitchen and brazilian teak hardwood in the sunroom.
