You guys are crazy! I have 3 sets of double French doors on the back of my house, which for us is the only doors we access every day. They are very surcure! But mine are NOT 2-18" in a 36" door space(my utility is though). I'll talk about utility doors later. My 3 sets double doors are 2-24"(each). One door on all 3 pairs, on the inside side of the door, has a top and a bottom latch lock and makes this door stationary. When the opposite door (passage door) is open you can see these two brass locks if you look up and down on the inside of the door where the cylinder catch latch hole is. They lock inside the molding above the door and into the threshold on the bottom...Was not unaffordable at all. I also have one double deadbolt lock on all the passage doors on all three sets of double French doors. It's a personal preference to have a knob on both doors of one set- one can be a dummy knob. They are very convenient when needing to get oversized furniture inside or out. Just open the passage door and unlatch the two brass latches, on top and bottom of the stationary door land open them both, it's that simple. However, when you close them you must latch the locks down, if not anyone can push them open even if the passage door is locked. When all 3 sets of my doors are open(makes up my back wall) it lets the outside in. They are also great for entertainmenting as my doors or in the keeping room where some like to gather to watch the game and use the restroom but still be a part of the outside party too. The original Postee is wanting this look above, but she only has a 36" max space opening drawn on the plans and can't make it larger(if I'm correct?) I see this is an OLDER blog, but I felt I needed to add my two cents just in case others read these just like I am at the moment, the photo at bottom are of my house double doors, the 3 set is to the left of the picture there is a hallway that they fall into.

Hollysprings - my sink is staying put. So the spot where you see it in the layout is exactly where it is now. I don't want a peninsula. What you don't see in this picture, is that to the right of the sink after that run of cabinets, is a bump out like a bay window with a 6' glass door to a screened in porch. We also have a 42"x72" kitchen table there. So the last thing I want to do is walk around a peninsula to get into the kitchen area. I don't want seating there either, it would bump with the seating at the kitchen table. Also, we currently dont have windows on that wall. so 2 21" windows will be an improvement over what natural light we currrently get. i like the idea of the range between 2 windows with a hood above. I do appreciate the idea that I don't need to center it exactly though. I guess an inch or 2 won't matter. Thanks everyone! I think the overall consensus is that 2" won't matter, right? In which case I will leave as is and maybe consider a 41" sink aisle.

Are you still working on this? I have questions about more than the fridge. This is an awkward layout and there is enough space there that I think you must have better options. Have you looked at moving the dining room entry to the right? Shifting an opening is not a huge ordeal, even if that is a load bearing wall (not sure if it is but someone mentioned the possibility in an earlier post). I'll try to post something mocked up best my crude skills allow here. As I have it, I think that would be a 36" fridge and there is a pinch point. I'm not sure of the depth there, but with a counter depth, an 18" DW or some other tweaks with proper measurements, I think you could improve the function of the space. On the dining room side, any crown would remain or be replaced above the opening and a good contractor should be able to adjust the baseboards. Keep working the plan until you get the kinks out. I lived with two horrible kitchens (we're talking 2 burners and they aren't flat or heat that well, dying ovens, DW tiled in and praying it wouldn't die -- even though it was so loud I hated to run it) for ten years between the two of them until I was able to do my kitchen. I learned a lot along the way and had time to explore outside the box ideas, come back and go off in different directions. All that exploration really paid off in the end, and I plan to use it long enough to make up for any delays. Anyway, here's one rough idea in case you hadn't though of it.

Hi Jo Jo - I did this quickly with lots of interruptions, so I apologize in advance if it doesn't work or doesn't make sense. Since you're turning your living room into a kitchen I'm a bit concerned about the view from the front door making it look like that door to the kitchen is still the primary way into the living space. My thought is that you don't need a doorway directly from the foyer to the kitchen and it's probably best that you don't. I thought that if you only had one doorway from the mudroom, you could put your appliances on the interior wall so you could take advantage of your view with bigger windows and a prime position from the island prep space. (Please don't take all those french doors literally, you could put picture windows and doors anywhere along that wall.) I think the powder room is redundant and not the best location for privacy. If you just located the full bath entrance off the side hall you wouldn't need it. Barring any structural requirements, you could widen the doorway to the living room and encourage traffic from the front door there instead of a choice between the entry past the powder or the entry through the kitchen. Quick kitchen layout... If the side hall has storage closets lining the side opposite the wall with the bathroom and study, it should be a nice, private "away space." And you won't need the powder in the center of your public space.
