Wood, Faux wood or silhouettes?

Well, I have a window covering lady coming to my house on Friday to see what I can do differently. Right now I have single cell inside mount and roman blinds mounted above. I had to do 2 layers because of the terrible glare on the tv. I am tired of having 2 sets of window coverings.

3 windows which are 8' across by 5' tall.

I am worried that if I do faux wood I will have to break them into 2 or 3 sections and that may let light in.

I am also worried that the silhouettes may be really expensive. lol

Any feedback?

Yes, Silhouettes are expensive. Hunter Douglas has a subsidiary that makes a cheaper version called Shangri-la, but I don't know if the cheaper version comes in the room darkening version.

Could you post a photo of the window? The amount of light which wood/faux wood blinds let in shouldn't interfere with TV watching.

There is no easy solution. You can try to keep as much of the sand as possible from entering your house (e.g., mats at all entryways), and try to pick up as much as you can with filtration systems, but the stuff is still going to be there. For cleaning dust around windows, I prefer using a vacuum cleaner and the round brush attachment. The ideal solution would be a whole house vacuum sytem. With a whole house system, you move from room to room with the hose and wand, switching between the floor attachment and the round brush for the blinds and window sills. You can do the same with a canister vacuum. One thing that will make the work go faster is not placing furniture in front of the windows. If you have to move anything so that you can get to the window to clean it, you have added significantly to the time you spend cleaning.

The lambswool duster sticks work well, you need to wipe them at least once every two weeks, and go over them with a damp rag once in a while. They should stay clean.

djsaw - I have 1" JC Penny basswood white blinds on all my windows and I get extremely good light when in the "open" position. I feel that because they are 1" instead of the 2", there is less bulk on the windows, thus allowing more light to filter in. The clear tilt wand works great to open and close. I have had these blinds up for 4 years and they still look like new. The White Silk matched my White Dove trim paint perfectly. Ratherbesewing - Like you, I have double-hung all wood windows with very little recession, but the 1" wood mounted great. There was a little variance in the depth of some of my windows (old house, replacements made over time, etc). Some probably didn't even have a full 1" recession. On one I remember we were only able to put screws in the two back holes instead of all four on the mounted holders, but you can't tell it. And what brands are decent. I have one room where I need to add blinds. Most of the blinds in my houses now are Hunter Douglas and they seem to have held up well. They came with the house - I didn't buy them. In my online shopping so far I haven't found HD - just offered if you work with someone in person which I don't need/want to do.

We moved 6 months ago and I'm also debating my window treatments on a daily basis! Woods, cellulars,or sihouettes?? I need to make a decision, and live with it, right or wrong!!! We have similar windows, I have 4, 118" wide windows. Tonight I pulled out my silhouette samples,I am able to order one 120" shade which is a plus!! Yes they are expensive, and won't do a good job on blocking light, they will only filter light similar to a cellular shade.The sheer view is nice, but the clearer view between wood slats suits me better. I worry that silhouettes are too formal for my rustic home. I wonder if others feel that way??? Your window size can probably accomodate one large IM wood blind, which I prefer. My larger windows require 2-3 blinds per window. Lots of people on the forum suggest white faux. I prefer woods,they are lighter, and for only a few dollars more I want the real thing. Perhaps the "no holes option "on the wood blinds may interest you. Also check out the Graber shutter style wood blind,a new concept, it is supposed to close tighter and block more light, I'm considering these. This 2 1/2" shutter wood blind is double the cost of woods, which are available in 2", 2 3/8" or 2 1/2" depending upon which company you use.
I want shutters, but mine would have to be OM, and I only like shutters with an IM. I think you'd be happy with a white two inch wood blind. You could hang grommet black out panels, though the tv would need to be pulled a bit forward, and slide them shut when needed. You could order black out cellular shades and they would block out all the light. Is there really that much glare on the tv?? My TV is situated exactly like yours, and I don't have any glare problems with my LCD TV. Keep us posted on your decision.

I hope the link works that I put in here. I was searching Smith + Noble because our romans are from them and I really liked them. So I stumbled upon these Trilogy shades. It is a very interesting concept! They are a cellular but each cell opens and closes so they turn into a horizontal vane. Very intesting. They offer a light blocking option but I am thinking that if I get that then it will be really really dark in here. That is how our bedroom is. When that blind is down it is so dark.

Also, the glare on the tv is mostly from the windows on the oposite side of the room that aren't pictured. The kitchen window, french door and large dining room. And then the blinds are closed it is a large white panel showing on the screen. lol Unless both coverings are down.

I do wonder if the darker silhouettes would work for what I want.

I also saw on S+N that they have a holeless wood blind. Pretty cool! From what we have researched, we would have to have 2 or 3 sets on one window.

DH wants dinner so better get going.
