Granite/Quartz and Kids

We have been trying to make the decision of Granite or Quartz. We have 3 small girls 5 and under and we do just about everything around the island. We have concerns about the maintenance of granite because of all the food they spill and smear on the counter and all their crafts, including paint that don't always get wiped right away.

In addition to staining we have concerns about chipping the edges of the island. We have iron backed stools which swivel and again with the kids the edges of the counter get a beating. We had planned on getting chiseled edges on the island and polished on the perimeters, or do you think polished edges on the island would not be a problem.

Our other concern is the support. Our current island has 12" overhang on 3 sides, the cabinets below have sculptured panels with not many spots we can put corbels. One of the quartz suppliers said 12" is not a problem for quartz (3cm).

We have looked at panels of both quartz and granite. Though my wife is not big on the movement of some of the granite we both feel it has more depth and interest. The quartz though is attractive regarding the kid factor.

Your thoughts or experience would be appreciated.
