Hi Veta, sorry I wasn't on here sooner to answer your question. I used bologona. I used two pounds of bologona, a couple stalks of celery, some sweet pickle relish, 9 hard boiled eggs, some Miracle Whip and sugar to taste. I chop up the meat in my food processor, dump it into a bowl and then chop up the other things, not the relish. Add the Miracle Whip to all of it and then add some sugar if you like. I didn't have any sweet pickle relish yesterday so I thawed some of my frozen dill pickles I had in my freezer and chopped those and used them. I like the sweet better, but it was okay. You can even add just a bit of onion if you like. My dill pickles had some onion so I didn't bother to add any more to it. It is probably better if it chills a while before using so the flavors will blend together. Of course you don't have to make this much, but with working men they eat a lot.

A friend always makes me a little container full if she has to make this for a funeral or something. I love it. My youngest DD had a party once with Lutheran funeral food...jello, hot dish, and of course the sandwiches. It was a hit!

Same here...in South Dakota, where I am from (well, there and Iowa) this sandwich filling was often served at funeral luncheons. I love it. I haven't had it in forever though. Of course...I might be having it today now. :) I will cut the crusts off white bread, put the bologna stuff on and cut the bread into triangles. That is the way it is done. LOL

Oh don't mess with my balogna! Love it fried, put a slather of Hellmans on rye bread and some lettuce and I'm in heaven!

You can also use leftover beef roast using the same method and it makes a wonderful sandwich. I like it even better.
Maybe the the sandwich you describe is sort of a Iowa thing as they even sell it in grocery stores and call it Ham Salad although it is made with bolonga.LOL!

I think it's a Midwest thing. I'm from Indiana, too, but nobody from other regions seems to know what it is. But they sure love it when they try it. We call it "ham salad" even though it's made with bologna. I'm really hungry for it now!

I make mine with garlic bologna, dill relish and mayo. Mother made it with regular bologna and sweet relish, but I like the dill better. I grind the meat up with the grinder on the Kitchen Aid mixer.

Lois, I bet it's be great made with roast beef! Maybe with a little honey mustard. I will have to experiment with that!!

We make it here in Illinois too. Now I wish I had some bologna, I'd make up some for supper tonight.

My kids always called it "Red Meat"....they loved it...but I'll bet you couldn't get them to eat it now.

You can make it with ham but it's way to salty for me...I use Bologna....pickle relish and mayo.

Grocery stores around here sell it and it is called sandwich spread. I think sometimes they just grind up any left over lunch meat and make it. I too think ham is a bit salty for me too. I like the low fat bologna if I can find it. Haven't found it for awhile. I usually use Echrich brand.

We call it ham salad, to. I make it all the time. I use 2 lbs bologna, 9 or so boiled eggs, a 24oz jar of sweet pickles,1 baseball sized onion and miracle whip. Sometimes after it sits you need to add more miracle. I use the old fashion hand grinder. I grind up the eggs first, then all the other things. Yummy, yummy..

One day I was coming out of Meijer and I heard someone call my name. It was a guy my hub worked with years ago and we had camped with a few times when our kids were young. He asked me if I would send him my ham salad recipe. He said he had trisd to make it a couple times and it never tasted right. He told me it was the best he had ever had. he gave me his email address and I sent it to him..

I, too, like the Echrich bologna the best.

I just got a new table and chairs and it won't work to fasten the grinder to it. I have to figure out some other place to do it. I am sure hubby wil get something figured out for me. It is one of his favorite things..

My mother use to make a sandwich spread kind of like Marilyns but she used roast beef.It was good.If you like Spam,and we do,I make this one.
1 can of Spam grated or chopped in the food processor.I prefer to grate mine with a cheese grater.
1/4 C. Miracle Whip (or mayo if you can't stand M/W).You may need a little more depending on how moist you like it.
A couple of dashes black pepper
1/4 tsp.garlic powder
2 Tbsp finely minced onion
3 Tbsp.finely chopped green olives
2 heaping Tbsp sweet pickle relish
Mix it all together and spread on bread.Also good on crackers as a snack.

Lilipad, I'll bet my youngest son in law would love your recipe. He loves Spam. Sometimes I buy him a can or two and put it in his Christmas stocking! I am going to copy your recipe and one of these days make him up a batch. I am going to have to buy some pickle relish too. Isn't it funny how some like Miracle Whip and some just Mayo. I personally like both of them. Susie, I too have the same problem with my grinder, finding a place to fasten it to. So I just use my food processor and pulse a few times. I probably even have an attachment for my Kitchen Aid mixer, just never got it out.

Glenda, my dh likes fried bologna on a bisquit with strawberry or blackberry jam.

These recipes sound like what my dh says his mother use to make for him when he was a kid. I couldn't understand what he was talking about, and he couldn't tell me what was in it. Now, I can surprise him...Thanks, peeps.
