Please help me choose between these two samples of wood flooring!

Here are the two color choices I'm debating.

We have a hodgepodge of furniture colors in our house, so it's a tie as far as contrasting with furniture.

We have a traditional style house with white cabinets and woodwork.

I'm worried the one on the left might be too red or dark, while the one on right might be too yellow or rustic. However, these seem to be the best choices in our price range, given all the factors we have to consider (mainly, 2 large dogs and glue down installation over concrete slab).

Any thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

I like the one on the left better.

Rustic is more on a darker scale, so I wouldn't worry about that if you're leaning to the yellower wood.

Love the left. I don't see red or dark at all. Rustic is the word that came to mind for the one on the right.

It almost seems like a runaway win for #2, huh? I originally really liked #2, but upon further searching, came across the other plan. So I wanted some outside opinions, thus my OP. lindybarts, you're probably right about that echo-effect, although I have a feeling that the Devon Park also has an overlook of sorts there as well. And, yes, two of the boys (arriving in April!) are twins! So they'll be sharing a room until they decide otherwise, at which point we'll convert the bonus to a third bedroom. You all had a good point about the kitchen / dining / laundy relationship. I hadn't even considered that until you all brought it up. Although I did notice the garage entry into the kitchen and wasn't real thrilled about that either. anvil, interesting and well thought out opinion on the 'serving bar' design. I'll have to give that some thought. And you are certainly right about polling for opinions like I'm doing here, but I am only trying to pick your brains and get ideas that I haven't thought of (like the kitchen / dining / laundry thing). I am an information junky, so I'll take all I can get. Also, I don't know if there is a way to track 'post views' on this forum. But there are no doubt many (some?) that viewed and didn't post. Those are the "I don't knows" A couple of other considerations; I now notice from looking at the rear elevations (not shown here) that #1 has a '2-story' family room with windows all the way up in the back. #2 has a 'vaulted' family room, but only 1 level of windows on the back. Our lot is very wooded, we're in zone 7 (I believe). Any opinions about the difference here? Also, I originally said that the plans are similar in sq. ft., but in reality, they are about 400 (finished - assuming the bonus room will be finished in the Devon Park plan) sq. ft. different, with plan #2 (Devon Park) being larger. I am shooting for a building cost of around $100/foot (may even owner build) not including the lot. By looking at these plans, is it valid to say that the Devon Park would cost about $40K more to build? I think not, mainly due to the more complex framing and roofing structure of the Prescott Ridge plan (see the images below). Is my thinking correct here? Prescott Ridge Devon Park To me, the Prescott looks more expensive to frame than the Devon. Thanks to all, please keep the ideas coming.

So far the kitchen exists only in my mind, only in the planning stage. I want all white with stainless steel appliances. Here are the other appliances I'm considering. my husband is not on board for a wood-topped island, though i agree that they are gorgeous and can be practical. so, i ended up choosing the darker one and am going to look at soapstone tomorrow in order that i find one with barely any movement and a hopefully even color. this montclair caught my eye in the marble place today and i've decided to go with my gut. i don't love the other, which is imperial danby. it's pretty, as were the calacatta gold, carrera select, and many others, but this one really caught me and i'm going to take a gamble. if i don't love it i'll have to live with it because we won't be able to replace it. there will be a lot going on in the kitchen, but this (and the pewter mesh grill on our ceiling to counter cabinet) are the only "patterned" elements in the room. i rarely make daring choices and, to me, this slab is a daring choice. yikes...wish me luck!

I like all the suggestions offered above better than either plan. You mention being able to visit as you prep on the peninsula, but I noticed that the seats will be in the traffic path from the porch. How often will you use the wood cooker? If not as often as the cooktop, I'd prefer llucy's idea of putting the fridge where the wall ovens are drawn in the first plan. That puts the fridge closer to the dining area, prep and cooking areas. I'd also use only one island if the fridge is moved, and I think I'd put the ovens where the wood stove is drawn, and build in a nook and wood storage for the range (which has soooo much charm, btw.) Re: Stages sink against the wall--there was a thread in the last year about that situation, and IIRC the owner was very disappointed and didn't like the cabinets above or beside it. I think this is the thread--you might want to read through it. Here's a quick rearrangement, just to illustrate a couple of the ideas suggested above. I know you don't want to change things up much, but something to consider. The clean-up sink would be the water source for prep for the wood stove. Can wood for the stove be stored near the garden entrance? I didn't read the previous planning thread, but if there's no reason the prep sink can't be on the island, you could have more space around the cooktop. There's a seat at each of the island, for someone who is hanging out while you work, and plenty of room for helpers to cook together. Whatever you ultimately decide, it looks as if you're going to have an amazing kitchen. I hope you'll come back and post a reveal thread, because I am looking forward to seeing the AGA in action!

Hard to believe that there's no offering without a pronounced red or yellow tint. I guess I would pick whichever one I liked best with the furniture in my public rooms. I have older oak floors that have faded out to that sort of yellow-orange tone. It works okay with my furniture which is all medium-toned wood, but I sure wish I could have a nice neutral walnut color.

I agree it's very surprising that there isn't a warm brown option! I found a couple warm brown options in other brands, but those had a shinier finishes and more pronounced handscraping.

It may be the species - hickory. I saw so many beautiful warm brown walnut choices in the stores, but sadly, walnut is too soft and vulnerable for my two rowdy dogs.

agree with everyone else. Love the darker one on the left. We just put down a floor similar to that one and were worried that it would be too dark but it wasn't and we love it!

Gosh on my monitor the one one of the right has a warm brown look. I swear monitors are so difficult to trust. My friend and I were looking for a specific rug and her laptop and mine showed two totally different tones!

I'd choose the one on the left. If you have a lot of wood tones in your house, I think you'll like keeping the floor on the darker side to ground your things.

NHW, you'll love the Hickory. I think it's the strongest wood when it comes to floor choices. We have two large dogs, and one dog has nails that can't be cut very short because of the "quicks" in them, and she's never scratched the floor. I have, but not the dogs. lol.

Thank you everyone - you made a difficult choice very easy. I went ahead and ordered the one on the left. :)

Oakleyok: thank you for mentioning how your dogs haven't scratched the wood! I've been worried that the hickory won't be strong enough and I should have gone exotic... and I really didn't think exotic went with the house. So, hearing this calms my fears.
