navy/caramel-gold/white color scheme...how?

DD is in her first apartment. She wants to do the bedroom in a navy, gold or caramel, and white color scheme. I am having tons of trouble envisioning and helping her. Here are the givens: caramel-gold drapes, lt. beige walls, beige carpet, white bedding.

She prefers a tailored look.

I do not have pictures because she is 4 hours away.

She has a white-washed country french hand-me-down chair from her grandmother that is currently covered in a pastel silk plaid. It is similar to this chair in style:

It can be painted and re-covered.

She has a small chest that is black but can be painted.

I am planning to help her make a padded headboard and a bed skirt.

I have found tons of fabric that incorporate caramel, aqua or spa blue and brown or black, but I'm stymied on the navy/caramel/white combo.

Anyone have any fabric sources that would pull this look together? Any other ideas for making the room look like it is not a hodge-podge of hand-me-downs (which is what it is).

I'd look for navy and white stripes for the chair, leaving the whitewash as is. I'd make a light warm-toned camel headboard with fat navy piping, a matching tailored bedskirt with a 4" navy band around the bottom, and a group of pillows in a mix of navy and white patterns. I'd paint the chest a warm white, and put a fat brass lamp with a white shade by the bed. I'd add wicker baskets for storage and a funky trunk or chest at the foot of the bed, frame a group of large-scale prints (shells, or fish, or architectural drawings, or coral, or whatever she likes...) in simple bamboo frames to furnish the walls, and add one full-length mirror somewhere in a rich but simple gold frame.

If I were you, I would wait to get some of the bedding and furniture before selecting paint color. A neutral might not be the best choice especially if you are drawn to darker tones. BM Van Deusen Blue is great color, but if you are going to do a dark blue duvet or comforter, then you might not want more blue. So, these elements all have to play well together. Loads of neutrals out there. If you just want neutral pick anyone of the warm grays. But a great chandelier against that neutral wall color won't be as dramatic as if the wall was a deeper color. So, think through everything before you choose a wall color. Do some sample boards of a variety of colors and see what works best with your chandelier and bedding. Those are your main features.

Suero, those fabrics are beautiful. All I could find when I looked was a Ralph Lauren nautical toile, which I thought looked masculine rather than tailored.

I instantly thought of how I have used that color scheme for decades: a navy skirt, camel colored sweater and a white blouse.

Gray! you are so right. So have I, but I didn't think of it. My casual Friday "uniform" is camel slacks, a blue blazer, and a white turtleneck!
