Dryer vent exhaust

My dryer vent exhausts onto my front porch blowing lint all over requiring frequent cleanup.

Does anyone know of a lint trap that will work and will be OK looking on the front porch? I really have no option to change the vent location.

Did you try replacing the one in the dryer with a new one? Mine does not spew lint at all to the outside...

Have you tried cleaning out the vent line? Periodic cleaning of the vent pipe will eliminate most of the lint that blows out.

What specific brand/model is involved? Difficult to answer accurately without knowing the details. Typically the dryer must be disassembled (rear or front panel) for access to change the internal 4" straight exhaust duct to the rear for a duct turned 90-degrees to the side.

Dont you think that if they had left the machine alone it would still be fine today, other than the plastic squeak? I know as I said before that the old Calypsos had this type hanging system(and possibly GE) and I have heard the Calypso make the squeak and creak noise. As I told you before I hate to have something new with a "flaw" but I have also felt that sometimes I was too picky and would convince myself I needed to get it checked out only to be sicker(& madder)after service. A car for example, have a small rattle, carry in for service, they take half the car apart to fix it, then when you start home you no longer have that rattle, you have three more to go with it where they took things apart--now that is my luck--and I am thinking"Why on earth didnt I live with one small rattle but it is too late to back up then". Just go forward from here and I think I would try another one like you have. It seems like a great washer and you know that the LG made F/L didnt last you very long so maybe this next one will?. OH and about Sears using Electolux now instead of LG for front-loaders, I have always been told it depends on who bid the cheapest to build them. Not sure if that is true but I have heard that. Maybe you need to start looking for the 57 Lady Kenmore!

Just to tell you where I am coming from on this - I wrote the book! (It's fun to say that.) "Residential Ventilation Handbook" It's been said pretty well already, but bath fans must vent all the way to the outside. Not just near an opening. Use insulated ducting to reduce the possibility of condensation in the ducting. Use 3 screws to attach the ducting to the hood. That will keep the ducting from turning or pulling off. Be careful that the screws don't interfere with backdraft dampers. (Cloth duck tape was made from the same duck material sailor's pants were made from. Not good at all for duct work.) If you can do it, transition from the 4" nozzle on the fan to 6" ducting. The flow will be much better. Point the nozzle of the fan in the direction of the exhaust hood. Air is lazy. There is a limit as to the distance a dryer can safely push exhaust ---safely being the longevity of the dryer motor and the efficiency of the dryer. Too far causes lint build up and decreased dryer efficiency. The number and types of elbows has to be factored into that distance. Like snoonyb wrote, two 45 degree elbows are less restrictive than one 90. It would be better to have the exhaust terminate so the exhaust cap allows the heat to blow out of the side of the deck, not under it. Allowing the exhaust under the deck allows lint build up and mold growth. A run of more than 16 feet probably needs a boost fan(DO NOT USE the cheap vent in line fans!!!!!!!!), but the dryer manufacturer will be able to supply the information. I've seen long runs with no boost fan almost completely plugged, and the dryers took two or more cycles to dry a load. It needs to be trapped at the beginning and cleaned out regularly, or it's a fire hazard (a friend's attached garage burned when a fire started in the dryer vent). Trapping it at the end is going to plug up, and back up lint into the duct. I can't find my code-check book, but I'm not even sure how much is legal to cover the vent, beyond water flaps.

Some lint coming out is normal, especially if it's a relatively short run. You can buy lint traps, but none of them look great. If you have access to the vent line somewhere between the dryer and the oultet you can install a lint trap in the line. They work well but you have to clean them periodically (which is what you should do with your vent line anyway).

This is probably a dumb question. How do you handle cleaning the dryer vent on a stacked unit? I know how to do it on a traditional one in the basement. Finally, I'm getting my dream of stacked washer/dryer on main floor. Once it's installed, moving this combo will be difficult. Maybe, I should start a new thread on this?
