My new favorite yard tool - an adjustable rake.

I thought I'd pass this along. I've been using an adjustable rake for a few years and it really is very handy. The tines adjust from 8 to 21 inches which makes it perfect for getting underneath roses or between shrubs. It's lightweight and has a telescoping handle. The tines are metal and even work well on wet matted leaves. I bought mine at Smith and Hawken when they were going out of business but I've seen them advertised at other places. Sears sells an OXO one but it seems smaller and a little flimsier.

For larger more open areas I use a regular rake but for tight spots this one is perfect. And if you close it up it's very easy to store.

disclaimer: as far as I know I don't own any stock in a company that either manufactures or sells these - I only wish I had invented it and held the patent.

My favorite compost tools are an old five-tine fork found in my father's toolshed, which I wrapped in tape because of the splinters, a fancy kitchen compost bucket, one of several 5 gal buckets for UCG, and a basket to carry out torn-up paper. Oh, and the rock to hold cardboard waiting for rain to soften it up. Most of that pile has been spread already. I'm also considering spreading birdseed on the working compost pile - these turkeys have done a wonderful job of scratching up the ground under my birdfeeders - maybe I can use them to turn the pile. Outsmarting the tree rats (squirrels) around my house is a full time job. This past spring I hit on a new idea. When I plant a container I invert an empty wire hanging basket over the container and the plant gets sun and can be watered but the squirrels can't dig in it. Another idea: I bring in a lot of plants to "over winter" under lights in my garage. I have so many that it is hard to reach my hand under the lights (4 shop lights) to the middle for watering. So I bought a pump sprayer with a long wand and it works great! In late winter I add a little liquid Dawn detergent, few drops, to each gallon of water and not only does the soil get wet easier but the worms that are waiting to hatch into distructive pets just don't hatch. Don't know what it costs me to run those four shop lights all winter but I don't care. It is a small price to pay to be able to "garden" every weekend in the garage. Many people have mentioned that they mark their outdoor plants with a "permanent Sharpie". In my experience there isn't a "permanent Sharpie", they all fade and quickly too. A grease pencil/china marker or expensive "no fade" garden center marker are the only markers I have found that won't disappoint you by fading. Eight years ago I decided to learn about gardening so I tapped into my local library. I checked out nearly every book they had on gardening and learned so much. The Gardenweb forums are also a wealth of information and entertainment. There is always something new to learn and I appreciate all of you who take the time to write in your ideas. One last idea from me...I keep a small notebook on my computer table and jot down any idea I find that's new and I will want to try. Little pieces of paper get lost but I always know where my notebook is and also use it when I order "on line" so I will remember the name of the company and the order date. Tina or Trowelgal

Include me in the felco fan club. I just love felco pruners. The best. I have an OXO trowel with a serrated edge (you can see it on Amazon, where I got it)that is marvelous for digging and cutting thru roots at the same time. I give it to my gardening friends as a little present, and everyone raves. I live in rocky terrain (CT foothills), so I do love my pry bar for exhuming rocks. And for winter, I love my USA made ice chipper. I have to say, I never buy tools made in China -- if you buy the best, they will serve you the best (just my opinion) lucia

Yard work and favorite garden tool

I bought a sturdy plastic stool thats about 6 or 7" high that I sit on when I'm weeding in the garden or potting up plants. It's the perfect width and height and works great since I can't stay on my knees or stand in one place too long without my knees locking up. I have loose knee caps due to being born with my legs twisted outwards until it looked like my feet were backwards (had to where leg braces when I slept as a baby in order to fix them). My other favorite tool is my parents digging pitch. It was given to them by some family friends and is one of the really good quality ones. It takes a lot of force to bend one of it's tines unlike the ones they sell in the chain stores. I'm constantly borrowing the thing since it's great for loosening up the soil around a weed's roots without damaging tree roots or any nearby good plants.

You're absolutely right about the adjustable rake--it is my favorite for getting the flower beds cleaned up, and I even use it to fluff the mulch in the vegetable garden. It will get under the plants without tearing things up! My husband found a pointed hoe with the telescoping handle. I can either use it as a hand-tool while on my knees, or extend the handle and use it standing up.
Hey, do you think he gets me these great tools so HE won't have to use them?

I have 3 of those rakes I got at Big Lots several years ago for only about 3 or 4 dollars each. My sister has been borrowing them ever since. I was in Tuesday Morning a couple of weeks ago and came across them again and I purchased 2 for her. Best rake I've ever used.

Now silly me - I should buy a second one in case someone volunteers to help! I also like the fact that leaves don't seem to get stuck as much as with a regular rake. So I can keep raking without having to stop frequently and clean it out.

That's a great idea to use it fluff the mulch - when I spread fertilizer or Preen I can use that to just lightly rake it into the top layer.

Mine is a 3 prong 2 sided garden hoe..Hand held..looks similar to the link below. Buy heavier duty and like a real hatchet on the hoe side.

I have 2 of them..I couldn't leave with out the ability to "hack" at things without this amazing tool.

I've never seen a rake like that. But I like the idea. Thanks for the info. Going to look at Orchard and see if they have it.
