I have only one regular cabinet that has shelves instead of drawers. My contractor thought I would need it. However, it is my one regret - go drawers!

I'm not sure what "take up unused space" means but I'd go for drawers over any other kind of base cabinets. The only non-drawer base cabs I have are one narrow cabinet where I store things like baking sheets and one blind corner cab with a lazy susan. I love my drawers, especially the wide deep ones.

I've never had rollouts but the conventional wisdom around here is why have a cabinet that requires two actions to get into (open door, pull out roll-out) versus one (pull drawer open). There are certainly dissenters but it makes sense to me.

Yes, you will enjoy all drawers.

They are easy to remove with no effort. With frameless cabinets, you'll have access to plumbing without stiles or dividers that get a little bit in the way.

I have all drawers. Most of these drawers are so high (deep) that they have room for internal drawers inside as well. This minimizes the number of panels, and that makes first impression viewing a big wow. Under the sink the drawer panel is high enough to go to the counter, so when it's opened, it looks like one of those "trash pullouts" that have a high front panel on a drawer. Hope this is not too much detail for you at this point while you are only deciding on the basic idea now.

Hi MTV, I think it depends on what you will be keeping in the lower area. I have all drawers, exept the tray cabinet, under the sink, and one cabinet in the island. If you need an area that doesn't move, i.e. I keep cleaning supplies under the sink, and wine & soda in the island cabinet, because I don't want those things sloshing around, and prefer not to keep them in the uppers or the pantry. Otherwise, I am thrilled with the drawers! I even keep my crockpot in the drawers, and LOVE how easy it is to get in and out. Good luck to you!!

Cabinet space is unused only if you don't use it...

However, I also say...All Drawers plus a trash pullout in/very near the Prep & Cooking Zones!

Other types? Trash pullout (which is like a drawer since the platform the trash bins sit on or hang from is attached to the cabinet door)
Tray Cabinet -- if you don't have a tall wall oven cabinet or other full-depth, tall cabinet to use as a tray cabinet (e.g., above the oven(s)), you may want to plan for 15" to 18" of tray storage space. It could be one cabinet or two smaller ones, depending on what works best for your layout. Additionally, you might want a 9" or so base tray cabinet for cutting boards. (Cutting boards are usually heavy, so you might not want to store them above waist high...and definitely not above your head...for safety reasons.)
Mixer Lift, if you want one...I didn't get one b/c it takes up too much room in a base cabinet and most of them are not sturdy enough to mix on. Even if they are, flour, etc. "splashes" on the floor and surrounding cabinets, making it more difficult to clean up than just the counter and backsplash.

I did all drawers except for 1 cabinet. I thought I would need a cabinet for the storage of large items such as a mixer. Go thru and take inventory of what you have and see if you will need it. I kind of regret getting the cabinet now. I could have kept the couple of taller items in the pantry.

a 'drawer' similar to this can be used for a number of items - water bottles and large soda bottles (what I'm thinking of using), cake pans, muffin tin, cookie sheets, etc. or even cutting boards, trays...depending on how deep you make it and the dividers put in it. no need for a door cab for those cookie sheets, cake pans...

Dividers for over the refrigerator cabinet are great too for storing cake pans and such.

We did almost all drawers, but had two 15" pullouts, also. The Ikea pull-out is really just a drawer on the very bottom, with a full-height door attached to it. There are optional interior pull-outs that can be added if you don't need all of the height inside. Folks use these for trash, recycling, pet food containers, etc. Our two are for the KA mixer (too tall to fit in a drawer) and the cat food bin.

Take a look at your larger appliances, pots, serving pieces, etc. that will need to go in your kitchen somewhere. A pullout or two might be helpful for you.

I have all drawers except the sink bases, trash pullout next to the prep sink and the back side of my island - which is 13" deep door cabinets -- like uppers, just on the base toe kick. Those cabinets hold small appliances, my outdoor dishes and can even hold a KA stand mixer, crockpot etc. You may have other places for such things -- just make sure the things you need to store have a home planned for them, but drawers and the shallower bases sure are easy to access without kneeling or digging into caves.

I have all drawers except for the two sink bases and a trash can pull out. I LOVE it!! the only thing I can't store in a drawer is my stand mixer, which is too heavy and large. It goes in the pantry though. I have no regrets at all about doing all drawers. It looks wonderful and is very functional.

Are the drawers able to hold heavy stuff like cast iron casseroles? We're doing ikea.
