I immediately thought of foam core, too. A person might need two layers glued together though. My husband is a contractor and he saves the big boxes that windows are packed in, so I could probably make cardboard cores from those, too. I don't usually buy large yardages and when I do, I will ask the seller if they have any extra bolt cores around. Many shops will save them and are happy to let you have them.

I get regular cardboard bolts from the local quilt shop who is happy to give empties away.

Red, I just saw an amazing fabric storage idea for fabric on bolts. I wish I could just direct you to a photo, but it is posted in another group. A group at Yahoo for posting ideas for setting up and organizing sewing rooms (with lots of pics) so maybe you'd enjoy it anyway. It's called Your Sewing Room. I saw this video on folding fabric and went thur and refolded all my fabric and stacked it on end like a book with the folded side facing out. Most of the fabric is in a bookcase the large pieces I hang on hangers in the closet.
Works for me.

Thanks for the link I had to laugh after she folded each piece and then tossed it to the side........mine never look like that when I am on the hunt...and I have tubs and I hate them.......they do look neat but mine are only for a very very short time LOL.....

I keep lots of my FQ's and smaller pieces in a drawer - on ends so that when I open the drawers, I can see all of the colors at a glance...I do have a couple of piles/baskets of smaller pieces/FQ's out around - I find that it's inspiring to see some fabrics and colors at random....
Meanwhile, for yardages,,,I am fortunate to have a contact where I can get lots of the cardboard cores to roll my fabrics on - if I go to a store to purchase and I buy the remaining yardage on a bolt, I'll usually ask for the bolt....otherwise I reroll when I get home...I have all of my larger lengths/bolts at the end of my sewing table against the wall.....

I loved that video about wrapping around a ruler. As soon as I get around to moving my stash from my bedroom closet to my "sewing" room, I"m going to do that with all of them. I think the uniformity of size will be wonderful and attractive.

The upper cabs I will put them in have frosted glass shelves. So I think they'll show as a spectrum of color. I'm stoked!

This has nothing to do with fabric but I have tons and tons of buttons...many containers..hidden in my cupboards in my sewing room...well, I saw a photo somewhere on how to organize my buttons....and this is what I'm going to do - I went to a local store where I've been able to find these glass jars with covers...the covers are plastic which is fine...and I bought 8....I'm going to sort 8 of the primary colors - all of the red tones, all of the blue tones, all of the green tones, all of the yellow tones, etc. into jars.....then each jar will get a fabric topper for the cover in the color of the buttons...and I can then arrange the jards on a shelf...I think they will make a great display - and when making projects, wallhangings, etc, and I need a certain color of button - I can take down just the jar that has the color I need...eventually I will perhaps get extra jars for other colors..but for now -I am limiting myself to 8..I'm really not sure where I'll even display the 8 yet.....but I loved the idea....

The pictures on here look so neat! I have to have mine in the plastic bins. I heat with LP gas and it leaves a film on things. I keep mine in the tubs. I do have a large glass curio that I keep on going projects or collections in so I can grab them quick. I started out putting fat quarters on it but that should lost hold! ~Abbigail~

The fabric is folded around a ruler just like the utube video
and there is nothing inside supporting it, they are standing on there own. My fat quarters are stacked in the drawers.
