Granite counter top

I am trying to find information about placing granite over the top of existing wood counter top. I have been told that this is something new that is being done, and I am very interested. I don't know if it is real granite or a look alike or exactly what it is, but would love to get any information that anyone has on this subject. I was told that this is what is being done in remodeling jobs. Thanks.

I've seen advertisements for companies that will come in and template, then "slipcover" your existing counters with stone veneer in a matter of hours. Alas, I can't put my finger on one of the adverts now, but the link below will take you to a company that does the same thing with engineered stone. Perhaps that will help.

You might look into a product by Benissimo. We are planning to use it in our remodeled kitchen. They are making granite tiles, and they make tiles with a bullnose already on them. Either corners or pieces with 1 side bullnosed. You could do the install yourself. The system is dsigned with minimum grout lines and only 2 tiles make up the depth on a 24" counter. The bullnose tiles are oversized to allow for the bullnose.

Depending on where you live, stones are generally around 2cm or 3cm thick. If 2cm, then a subtop is needed under the stone. So with 1" = 2.54cm: 2cm = 0.787" 3cm = 1.181" These are averages with actual slab thicknesses around those numbers.

Also, I was thinking about getting a single quartz stone just to avoid the too many grout lines (May be white with some brown/grey vein). Do you think it will look good?

They make a 3/8" granite with a fiberglass backing. It costs about the same as standard granite and is not as strong, nor does it come in as many colors. You do know granite will take regular care to maintain it.

Following up with jeffinmontery, there is a company where I live that has the granite tiles and accessory pieces. I have a Formica countertop and asked about using the granite tiles. The real issue is roughing up the existing surface so it will accept the mastic to hold down the tiles. It would also require removing the sink and any build in appliances such as a countertop burner unit so the tiles fit under in these areas. You will also need to be able to cut the tiles to fit properly around the sink and any built-ins.

Now, we have priced having our countertops replaced with full sheets of granite. $2,500 more or less. Using the granite tiles, probably $250 plus the cost of mastic and grout so maybe $300 and the place I mentioned has a nice selection of colors. Good luck.

2 cm granite requires support. 3 cm granite does not. 1 cm would require even stiffer support.
It is not very hard to remove existing counters and replace them with either plywood and 2 cm or a single layer of 3 cm.
