Need advice on cutting ceiling joists

I am installing my island vent hood. The mounting bracket and chimney happen to be too wide to fit between ceiling joists. I can't mount it below the joists because, although you can adjust the height, it won't go high enough to be out of my way.

So basically I have two choices... One would be to modify the chimney hood and mounting frame of the island hood by cutting it shorter with tin snips. The other would be to cut two ceiling joists and then run two cross braces perpendicular, between the two other joists on the outsides of the two that would be cut... then tie the cut ends of the ct joists into the cross braces. This would give me a wide enough opening to pass the chimney up into the attic, where I could build support braces to hang the hood from above the ceiling line.

Any suggestions on which would be the smarter route?
