Not a morel in sight!

I took the kids and two of Lauren's friends morel mushroom hunting in a state park in IN this morning. We looked and looked and didn't find one of them...only holes all over the forest where it looked like someone had pulled them up already. They said it happened last year because they announced the places where they were growing two weeks or something before the last festival and everyone went out and picked them all.

Looks like someone did it again. They were going to have them for sale, $20 for half a pound later in the afternoon but I decided I didn't like morels that much and we left to go eat lunch at a nearby town. They were having some other type of festival in that little town: Nashville and it was packed with people. Bought Luther some doggy treats after we ate and then went horse back riding back in the park before coming home.

I'm kinda disappointed we didn't bring any mushrooms home. We did find other mushrooms, a baby salamader, a baby snake (the girls who were more interested in creatures than mushrooms) and Alex picked up a tick.

Was looking around Cracker Barrel and found a ceramic mushroom for potted plants so I bought one. At least I got a mushroom to take home with me. LOL!

Everyone is talking about morels lately, and it makes me curious about them. But is it safe to pick mushrooms? I'd be nervous since I've always heard warnings about that being dangerous. Or are morels different some how? I'm just curious.

Morels are safe and there's no mistaking them for something else...and they are delicious. I might go hunting for them tomorrow, although I've heard there is a bumper crop of ticks this year.

Yes, there are incidents of huge brawls breaking out over hunting ground RIGHTS! They keep there places a secret. I have had hunters come by here and ask if I knew where they were some growing. Are you kidding? If I knew, do you think I would tell you? Seriously. If I ever caught anyone on my land foraging, I would beat them with an ugly stick. Private Property - Keep out! But seriously, my big dogs keep strangers away. Been here 17 years and never had anyone prowling around yet, anyway. Yes, they are very good fried like that. Yum! I found one two years ago that was bigger than my hand. That is the biggest one I have ever found, and only the one. I found four more 'Shrooms early this morning. Nice big ones too. It's so fun to find them! Like hunting for Easter Eggs! I have never found any bugs in mine when I soak them, but you definitely want to get all that soil off and out of them, and then remember to throw the rinse water back out where you found them for next year's crop. I now have two gallon size zip-lock bags full waiting in the fridge for the Spring Feast. :) ----------------------------- sandyslopes: Animals will eat them too, like deer, so I am sure that the early humans saw this and took notice. They are hideous looking things for sure, aren't they?

Hi All, It was snowing on my way home from work today: ( Spring really in at a stand still. I think we are going to jump straight into summer, lol. Laura, I had to work on Easter. I kept joking that we were scheduled to work because management decided we were the heathens. I did have a nice Good Friday though. I went to the Broadway Market with my sister-in-law and her kids. It is an old Polish tradition to go there for foods like homemade candy and baked goods, see the easter bunny, buy Polish pottery and so on. It was packed as it always is pre-Easter. It is is a strange place because the whole neighborhood is now a ghetto, but the Broadway Market is still there. I could hardly carry out all the stuff I bought! I did buy two pretty Easter planters for my relatives that were in the hospital and I stopped to see them on the way home. Maryanne, I sure hope your testing went good. I've never had to do that for a job. Though this one I did have to do a drug test. Beth, Glad to hear most of the flowers survived. The winter aconites you sent me are still blooming! They are very cheery looking. They multiply don't they? Susan, I'm glad you are getting your family into shape. I know how it is. I'm afraid to leave Gary home alone for more than 2 days, lol. I'm sure hoping your brother will be ok. My cousin had to have her brain operated on for tumors about 2 years ago now, and she is doing good, so it is possible : ) Susann, I've not bought from them. Suzi, it's a great outing worth the drive, but maybe not just for the morels. There were a couple whole caps (I couldn't say what the cut up bits were other than amazingly delicious) in a dish made with "wild mushrooms", which could change on a daily basis given availability. Maybe call ahead to check. You'll need a reservation anyway. The Restaurant at the Getty Center. The scallops. Btw, two out of three of the scallops had a bit of grit and were a little overcooked. The dish was really delicious, but only one of the scallops was spot on. But I'm picky. And I should say, they looked like morels, but being no expert, I could have mistaken them for a cousin. Since I knew they were just coming in, I figured they must be morels. :)

"Yes they are disgusting things and like rats and mice, utterly useless for anything but destruction." What an incredibly egocentric view of the world!! No animal put on this earth is utterly useless.....they all serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things. It is just us humans interfering and importing them where they do not live naturally or destroying their natural habitats, forcing them into contact with us that throws the equation out of balance. And then we get all up in arms when - through our own making - they have become a nuisance species!! btw, even hunting nuisance species would be regulated and monitored. You can't have hunters running around willy-nilly shooting whatever they want whenever they want, even on their own property!!

Susan, there was a chart with pictures of look alike mushrooms that they don't suggest you eat. The chart says some can make you sick if you eat them, a few looked a little bit like morels but I would've had one of the park rangers look at them before I took them home and ate them, IF I we had found any.

My son from Mi called & told me he found bunches of Morels today & that he's gonna freeze some for me!! Yea!

Morels are safe to eat so long as they are actually morels. There is another mushroom that appears similar to a morel, called a "false morel", and it will make you sick. Get a good guide book and look at the differences between the two until you are confident that you can tell the difference.

Botanically, the two mushrooms have different gill structures, the thing is, it has been so long ago since my botany class that I do not remember the difference - just remember that the gill structure is a good identification to tell the two apart.

We ate our morels last evening, so good! I don't know if anymore will be found on our place or not. After you have picked morels for so many years like we have, you know the difference. Hint, they like to grow under old apple trees too.

From their chart at the park, Jemdandy, the false morels' cap isn't attached to the stem like realy morels. A couple of them looked a lot like the real ones. The ex and I went hunting for them years ago but never found any. His uncle used to hunt them and bring me some every so often.

There's another festival in Irvine KY every year but I missed it once again this year because I had to work on that weekend. I'm taking off for next year's, going to put in leave to make sure I can go. LOL!

Hubby bought a package of dried morels awhile ago -- how do I fix them? Recipes?

Petaloid, the only way I've eaten them is dipped in egg and flour and sauteed in butter. They are SO good!

Where did he get the dried morels?

Not a morel in sight!
