Husband removed the chandelier and spot lights and replaced with standard brushed chrome ceiling lights, he kept hitting his head on the chandelier, and it made him cranky!

now we have two sets of 6 ft tallx3 ft wide shelves along the wall
where the built in shelf is.

Look closely at the picture with the kitchen table and you will see a door open at the end of the hallway; the built in dresser in that room shows just a little. It is the details like the softly rounded corners on the ceiling, the arched doorways and the built ins that made us fall in love with it when we first viewed this home so many years ago.

Sigh ... I love houses of this vintage and style. The arches, built-ins, hardwood floors, and the feeling that June Cleaver could come walking through there any minute ... thank you.

I am a true fan of primary colors, and the flat lavender in this room just depressed me. It is the smallest of the rooms and now houses our library and computer. DH painted it light buttery yellow. The window faces south but is shaded most of the summer by those huge trees in front. Using yellow semi gloss lightened up the room, reflects the available light, and made it cheerful. I have not decided what I'll do for curtains in here.

(I'm expecting to see an Angry Bird launched at that net full of critters and dropping them all over the person in the chair!)

What a lovely little house, and how lucky you are to be so near Lake Huron. Sounds like you are already well on your way to making it yours.

I like the rounded doorways, and the rounded shape of the end of the soffit and the unusual shape of the cornice board over the sink give those elements some character.

What a charming home. It's no wonder that you held onto the thought of owning it for years. What incredible luck that it became yours.

mama goose, those are pergo floors, but the the goofy thing is the people who put them in covered amazing original spruce floors. The kitchen floor is a laminate install as well and not too well done, it sounds hollow when walked on. We have not looked to see if the original floors were torn out or not, if they are still there, we will try to give them back to the house. The kitchen will get linoleum in keeping with the character of the house. ( if we get that far and can afford it) there are lots of other neat features
to this house and we have plans to do other work first. more on that later LOL
Pal, I like it too. The cabinets are original equipment but some were removed and re used in the basement. Originally there were cabinets mounted to the soffit and counter and more cabinets
underneath it. We may be able to reclaim the cabinets and restore them to their original place, with open shelving or an island concept beneath. Haven't given it much thought. The people we bought it from bumped out the counter to put in a dishwasher and moved the stove a little to the left of the wall fan, which used to be centered right over the stove. I don't really like that, but we will have to live with it. Never had a dish washer, don't think we'll use one at this late stage of life.

brownysmom, hhireno, it is a dream we never thought would come true. We feel so blessed, and it still makes my hair stand on end to think how it came about. We had looked with a realtor for several days and found nothing within walking distance of the lake that was to our liking or small budget. Almost everything we were even considering needed work. We were thinking we would have to settle for one of the houses far to the west of the lake in a sort of undesirable location and were depressed, almost out of time and having to go home the next day. That morning i took the dog for a walk at about 4 AM in a drizzle and saw the for sale by owner sign. I peered through the breaking dawn and froze in place as I realized it was the same house we had bid on and lost so many years ago. Practically ran that poor dog all the way back to the motel where we were staying and woke poor spouse up from a dead sleep in glee. We saw it again and bid on it, sealed the deal at that table that same night. still doesn't seem real. I have to pinch myself.

Three things made me LOL: the angry birds comment, your husband hitting his head on the light fixture, and you waking him from a dead sleep in glee. The poor guy, startled awake to you babbling excitedly.

My parents used to live across the street from Lake Huron. Lovely house. Maybe a two minute walk to the beach.
