How to make a pattern

Am a member of GW, but have never had occasion to post on this forum, so forgive me for asking probably a much-asked question. Or direct me to a link as the Search function as we know is not always reliable.

Someone on the Home Decorating forum posted this adorable vintage wall hanging. I have asked my Mom's quilting group to reproduce it for me in a 12" X 16" size. How do I make the pattern for them? apparently they need each object (tea pot, cup,ect) as this is appliquÃ¯Â¿Â½. Is there a free online source to make patterns? Thank you for any help.

Just print out that photo and figure out by what percentage you need to enlarge the image to get the size you want. Then print out the individual items enlarged by that percentage. Cut those elements out, and there's your pattern.

A copy shop can help you with the math, and print it out to exactly your specs. Have several copies made, so there is more than one to cut up, just in case.

I think Mary has it. Just copy and print, then enlarge to the size you want. Kinkos can help. If you don't need exactly those specific tea pots, etc, then you can go to google.com, click on Images and do a search for whatever shape you want. None of the images in your wallhanging are very detailed or difficult so it should be easy to find what you want.

The girl who designed that pattern is a military wife with 4 young children. She supplements their income with her designs. Her patterns are unique and very well written; easy to follow. I've purchased a few of them, including that one.

What kind of valance are you making? Most do not require any pattern as they are usually just rectangles sewn together. For a 91" window I would use 4 widths of 54" fabric seamed together. This would give you slightly more than 2 times fullness. A good site for directions is www.alternative-windows.com. Also all of the Singer Sewing for the Home books as well as the Sunset Curtains, Draperies, and Shades are excellent. I own them, but they are also available at my library.

Please understand it has been a very long time since I have done this. Our late dog, Suzy, loved clothes. I put her up on the sewing table and fashioned a rain coat pattern for her using medical paper (the paper you lay on at the doctor's office), she was so sweet and cooperative. She knew it was something for her to wear. Buy some Swedish Tracing Paper, it is used for pattern making, it is fairly soft and sewable. The Swedish Tracing Paper should be easier to work with than medical paper. Then drape, cut, and shape it on your dog until you have what you want for a pattern. I hope this helps. Another thing - you can have one printed in color as a guide, but the copies to cut up can be done is gray-scale. That might save a few dollars.
