Upset About Carpet Choices (pics)

I will be replacing the carpeting on my foyer staircase as well as the hall and 4 bedrooms upstairs. Currently the entire area is carpeted in a neutral off-white that has seen better days in its 13 years.

When the house was built, the previous owners did not choose to upgrade the staircase so I don't have hard wood under the carpet. To make matters worse, the carpet was wrapped around the stringers to either side of the staircase.

It was my hope to remove the carpet from the stairs and have a carpenter come in to add mouldings to the stringers so that only the stairs and risers would be carpeted. Unfortunately the staircase wasn't built well and the carpenter cannot fix the mess short of practically rebuilding the entire staircase.

Of course I fell in love with a printed carpet for the stairs and hallway that would look just awful wrapped around the stringers.

Has anyone run into a similar problem? Any suggestions?

Also, I forgot to mention WHY I am so upset about the carpet choices....I really wanted a printed carpet (pictured below), but I don't think it will look good wrapped around the stairs and butting up against the wallpaper in my foyer. So, I will have to use the same solid carpet on the stairs, hall and bedrooms since I cannot get the mouldings repaired.

Karezz, your stairs appear to be in SO much better shape then mine when I took my carpet off. I think it's a real shame that they carpeted the outside stringers. I think it would be worth a try to patch and caulk the stringers. Once they are painted with your trim paint I really think it would look better than the carpet.

Look at my staircase blog and maybe it will give you some idea of how the stringers could potentially look after some TLC.

A cautionary tale for anyone buying porcelain tile that is mimicing natural stone -- there is a huge difference from tile to tile. When I was looking for tile for my kitchen/foyer/laundry area (about 700 sq ft so I had to get it right the 1st time), I ordered many boxes of tiles. I would like the sample board in the store, but that is not always representative of all the tiles. I ordered a lot of boxes of tile. I would love the tile in the store, order a box, and end up hating the tiles. Sure, I loved the 4 tiles the store showed, but the other 4 (or 6 or whatever) were just ugly. I spent significant $$ on ordering boxes of tile and could have opened my own tile store by the time I was done, but in the end it saved me a lot of money. Buying 1 box for 20 sq ft was a lot cheaper than enough for 700 sq ft. It look a long time and a lot of boxes, but I did eventually find a tile I liked. Do not assume that the sample board in the store is showing the full range of variation.

If you don't like the slabs you've been shown, then pick slabs elsewhere. If you don't like the fabricator's policies that you've been dealing with, then pick another fabricator. Caveat emptor though. The reason your builder chooses to do business with the KD and the fabricator you've been dealing with is they don't give him headaches. That's VERY important to a builder. Delays and mismeasures cost him money and you aggravation. If they didn't do a good job, he'd use someone else. A lot of builders wouldn't allow you to go elsewhere, so if yours does, then you have someone fairly flexible as far as your allowances go. However, your allowance may not go as far with someone else as it does with his people, as he may have negotiated prices with them that are lower than someone else would charge you. If that doesn't seem to be the case, then it very well could be a case of apples to oranges as far as quality of stone, and certainly quality of fabrication. Just because you can find a stone at multiple yards doesn't mean that it's equal in structural integrity or in desirability for it's uniqueness. Some stone yards have better wholesale wranglers in the field to snatch up the better stone, leaving the dreck to the rest. And no, the less desirable won't cost as much as the prettier stuff. If you choose to not use "his" people for products or services, be it stone or flooring, then it's up to you to vet both the product that you choose and any trade that you might choose to use yourself. That means interviewing them and viewing their work and doing all of the due diligence that your builder has already done with his people. And, anyone that you hire direct will not work "for" the builder. They will be your responsibility to deal with if they screw up your stone. Or drop it on your new cabinets. Or your floor. Your builder won't be responsible for the suitability of your product choices or your direct hire's actions. That's the risk you take when you hire trades people directly.

Outside of the bedroom. The floors that the carpet will butt up to in the living area. Light gray concrete. Although I suspect the bedroom door will always be shut. Not sure what the decor in this living room will be quite yet.

Our stairs are carpeted, with the first few that show having end caps on them. Are the stairs in good enough shape to do that?

Just to be a devil's advocate, have you had any finish carpenters come in to take a look at this? Not a regular all-purpose carpenter but someone who really specializes in the fiddly, exacting details. I think it might be worth trying to get two or three to come in and look at this just to see what can be done with it, because a good finish carpenter can do some amazing things.

I'm not really sure that it would be all that hard to do what you want with your stairs. The "carpentry mess" you refer to just looks like unfinished stairs to me. A good finish carpenter should be able to fix you right up.

Don't get me wrong, it'll be an aggravating, time consuming, fidgety project. I just don't think it falls anywhere close to impossible on the home-repair spectrum.

I agree with the above posts, get another opinion from a more specialized carpentar.

I do have a suggestion. Have you thought about facing out the stringers with a (spelling) Lou-on and adding your trim to that? It will offer a smooth painting surface and it's thin so it won't add a lot of bulk to the stairs!

Thanks to all for the tips and the pictures!!

The carpenter I talked to yesterday couldn't do it. Another carpenter was just here and he is very confident that it can be fixed without a problem - in fact he's done this before. He's charging me $700 which I think is a fair price (NJ).

I'll post some AFTER pictures soon!!

Glad you found someone who can help at such a reasonable price. That's great! I love your carpet choice, by the way.
