hemming pants, but not permanently

I saw something in a magazine that I intended to buy but I didn't tear the ad out and I have no idea where I saw this.

It works for the times you wear shoes of different heel heights with slacks.

It's a group of magnet "dots" that are placed inside your pant leg and on the inside of the bottom length of the slacks. When you fold the pant leg inside, the magnets attach to each other and the slacks are shortened for flats or low heels. When the magnets are separated, the length goes down for higher heeled shoes.

Has anyone come across these magnets?

What about the press at the bottom? How do you adjust that?

the only thing I can think of is to stabilize the hem from the inside with 2-sided fusible web, and something heavy like denim- with the grain going in the opposite direction.

The material was probably not cut on straight grain on that leg. It was cut more toward the bias. As you are sewing you are probably stretching the cuff so it puckers. Now that you have it pressed, run a basting stitch along the top of the hem--right through the hem and leg. Then go back and do your hemming. Remove the basting when you are finished. Be careful not to pull the material. If you have to leave a small gap on the turned up hem side between stitches. This will iron out later.

The reason for the seam being pressed open is to reduce the bulk in the seam. Especially at the hem. What you do depends a lot on the weight of the fabric you're working with. If you're ok with the bulk issue, then it doesn't really matter which way you press the seam. You might want to follow the seam up to the crotch area and see if the seam is still open. If it goes one way or the other, then do the same thing.

That sounds like what I saw in the magazine but supposedly it's already on the market. I could just kick myself for not tearing out the page for reference.
I'm not sure about pressing the hem and how that would work, but it sure would be nice to have pants work with different heel heights.

i have never tried the magnets, not sure i'd have much faith in that. but there is tape you can get at fabric stores, it's double sided, just for this purpose. ~ liz

Made my mother mad when I used safety pins to hem my clothes

I would just use double sided tape, too - in fact I have. It peels off easily if you want to put the hem back down. I just use a roll that came with a window kit - the kit you buy to put plastic on your windows in the winter.

It's a double-sided hemming tape (NO ironing, it's removable) that will go safely through the wash, supposedly.

Glenda I still use safety pins in the seamline and duct tape at the back to shorten jeans for different footwear.
