Well, I guess I'd better tell you guys....

Our sweet Allie is now resting with her sister Maggie. She went downhill really fast, of course, she was sickly anyway, but couple days ago, she just could not stand. We would put her out to pee, and she just collapsed. Plus all the panting and wheezing from her Cushings disease. I told the guys that today it was time, son just about fell apart, Allie was his dog when he was married, then they both came here with us. Anyway, the vet put her to rest in the car, like they did Maggie. They are buried near the woods, and we are just wiped out! We see the water bowls, dogfood, beds, leash, and know that you'll never see them again, hear them barking, etc. It's such an empty feeling when you can't feel dog fur again. Sorry this is so long, but just had to get it all out. Probably never get anoother dog, because of our age, but an orange kitty is not out of the question down the road. thanks for listening. Tomorrow I'll tell you a sweet, but very touching story relating to this.

I am definitely not a bad customer. I'm a polite, unconfrontational person. I put my annuals on counter, commented to the clerk how pretty I thought they were, and asked if they had any Eagles in the tall pines by the shade area because I heard a huge whoosh and saw the tail end of some huge brown bird while I was over there ( she thought it was a turkey). Then I said, "I just wanted to let you know that you have a hosta over there with a virus- have you ever heard of hosta virus X, or HVX?". That's when she said she hadn't heard of it and called over to the other counter and asked the owner, who was immediately short with me as described above. Not sure how much friendlier I could have been with my approach. Steve, you may have a point. I'm not sure how the whole nursery state inspection works, but you'd think that if the inspectors were informed about the virus, nursery owners would be more trusting of the source (instead of hearing it from a know it all, busy body customer who obviously believes everything she reads on the Internet)

Leava, The watering issue always will be with us so I try not to stress over it when I have to stop watering and let plants die, which generally happens about 1 out of 3 years here. Unfortunately, it often happens 2 or 3 years in a row, but then after that, I know it likely won't happen for a while again. It is excrutiating to leave our lovingly-raised plants to suffer, but that's just how it is when you live and garden in an area prone to drought. It is a shame that some years we have way too much water and other years we have way too little, but we sure can't do anything about it. Succession planting sounds harder than it is. If you know you're planting broccoli, for example, and it matures in 60 days from transplant, just look at the calendar 60 days out from your transplant date and ask yourself what grows well if planted in that month. I usually start seeds of succession crops in tiny bathroom-sized paper cups with the bottoms cut out about 5-7 days before I expect to harvest the in-ground plants. Then, with harvest in the morning and transplanting the new crop (cups and all to lessen transplant shock) in the afternoon (or evening if the weather is very hot), that bed doesn't stay out of production long. You also can plant many succession crops by direct-sowing the seed in the ground, but with each crop you have to know your soil temps and air temps and make sure it isn't too hot for the succession crop to sprout. I just like starting mine inside in cups so I'll have an "instant replacement" and fill up that space and put it to work right away. I hate sowing seed in summer, waiting a week or two for it to sprout, and then having to thin or replant in areas as needed. I'd rather have the sure think of plugging in a growing plant into each bit of available space. Really, if you're replacing cool season crops, you have to replace them with a warm season crop so that narrows down your choices a lot, and it shouldn't be tomatoes or peppers (unless they're a new batch for fall) since they already should be in the ground before you're harvesting something like broccoli or cabbage. It can be harder to decide on succession crops for fall because you can choose from both some shorter-season warm-season crops or some of the cool-season crops. For fall, I try to plant more of whatever we have put up the least of or whatever we like the best. I don't necessarily succession crop after mid-summer if it is a very dry summer because there's no point in planting something that will struggle with a lack of water. Dawn

We learned a lot about the Camp. It is designed for kids who wouldn't financially be able to go. Each coffee shop recommends a boy and girl in their town who would benefit. The very first camp, years ago was very rustic, camping, etc. Then the Board of Directors at the Foundation suggested making the camp a luxurious, state of the art setting, where they would be treated like guests and live like kings, and have memories that would last forever. Well! There are greenhouses here, a computer lab, a several thousand dollar observatory with a humongous telescope to see the stars and planets (the roof opens electronically), a climbing wall, archery, volleyball, canoeing, fishing, 4 bunkhouses like the one pictured and gorgeous manicured treed grounds. More than one kid told me how much they loved it there and one girl is trying to be a Leader there for next year. Get this, we were invited guests at lunch yesterday. (where the meals are all nutritious, and family style; the kids can eat as much as they want...they never want to see a kid go hungry). Anyway, the guys in our group had some of the younger boys sitting with them, "so they could teach them to treat women with respect." Some of these kids come from rough homes, and they belittle females. We happened to sit with the girls and the Leader was saying that when she left one of the bunkhouses yesterday the language that came out of one of the young girls, directed at her was pretty rough. So the older ones teach the younger ones that people are to be treated nicely and with respect. How very cool is that. The older ones we were with, had respect in spades.

OP, I am so sorry you're going through this! For anyone who's been thinking of getting the vaccine, this is your wake-up call! Go now. Get it done! I had the shot last summer, and I'll tell you a few things about it -- things I didn't know -- I'm assuming my experience was typical, which may or may not be true: - My doctor does not keep the vaccine in stock. Apparently relatively few people get the vaccine, and it's somewhat in short supply. When I requested the shot, my doctor "ordered it to my pharmacy". He told me to wait a couple days before I called the pharmacy to see if it was available. - I had the first shot, which I think cost a $49 co-pay -- a whole lot better than some of you paid! Wow, the costs! And the pharmacist put the remaining dose into her fridge /labeled with my name. - If memory serves, I had to go back no earlier than 2 months /no more than 4 months later. Again, I paid a $49 co-pay. Most of all, I walked away thinking to myself, "One thing I can cross off my list of concerns" and feeling very pleased. Someone asked whether you can have another shot later. I know the answer: yes. My mother had the older single-shot vaccine, and she recently took the newer two-shot vaccine. Her doc said that the newer vaccine is superior, and it won't hurt you to have both.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Our pets are so loved by us. We have been on a trip for 2 weeks, and I am anxious to see our old rescue who also suffers from cushings and the summer heat when it comes will be a test. I know the words do not fill up the space that those so loved fur kids left....MY heart aches for you. (((((HUGS)))) Such loving photos...I still cherish those photos and memories.

Oh geez, I am so sorry!! Years ago, we lost both of our dogs within a week of each other. I well remember it, you just kind of go numb, it's so hard. I am so sorry.

Oh gosh...I can't imagine the saddness you are all going through. I thought about Allie when Maggie left you all. She would have been lost without her. Now they are together. That should give you some comfort.

I just sat here and cried when I read this. We just had one of our dogs put to sleep last month, and I know how hard it is to say goodbye. I cannot even imagine the sadness you are feeling.

We, too, are wondering if we are too old to get another dog, but I think (or at least hope) we will do it soon. Our pup (how did he get to be 8?) is lonesome and he's never been an only dog, nor have we ever been without at least 2 in almost 40 years.

It's comforting to think of them being able to run freely without pain and suffering....

It was hard to imagine Allie without Maggie. But oh, how sad for you all. Such lovely dogs. And completely happy dogs, too, I'm sure. How good you are to do what needed to be done.

I am sorry! I know how much it hurts to look at those toys and empty bowls. It has been a few years since we had to say goodbye to our sixteen-year-old Dreyfus and we also decided we were too old to get another dog. However, lately I have been thinking of getting a Labradoodle to train as a service dog. You may change your mind. Sending comforting thoughts and hugs for all your family members who are hurting.

I am SO sorry for you. Having to have two beloved dogs put down so close together is devastating. I had a 6 wk. period when two beloved cats died unexpectidly (6 & 17 yrs. old) and then our beloved 17 yr. old dog had to be put down (RIP Shadow.) 4 wks. later my DH unexpectidly got a job offer for us to move 1000 miles to be near the 4 grandkids. It was almost like the "kids" knew what was coming up and didn't want to do the move (Shadow and Crash had already done a 900 mi. move.) It's been 7 yrs. I still miss them all. I feel your pain.

Seeing all their gear, bowls, toys around the house, it just hits you hard, I know.
I don't think I've cried so hard in a long time when I stepped through the kitchen doorway the first time after I took down my pup's gate.

So sad. What gorgeous dogs they were. I'm so sorry for your loss. It's the downside to having pets. Mostly you outlive them, and then the sorrow starts. I can still tear up thinking of my first cat who has been dead over 20 years now.

I am so sorry you have lost 2 babies. I know the pain. The first few days, I keep expecting to see them in their favorite places, under the table, in the hall where they nap, by their food bowls. Eventually you stop looking. I am so terribly sorry. A kitty will help with healing, even if it just distracts you. My sympathy.
