Are you quilting this weekend? Aug. 17-19

Here we go again! I haven't been near my sewing machine for about two weeks. DH is recovering from his knee surgery and I am still not feeling well. My ribs hurt from coughing. I hope I feel well enough to finish a small quilt that I am making from a pattern in "Another bite of Schnibbles" using a charm pack.

I probably won't get much quilting in this weekend, because my husband and I will be quite busy celebrating our 50th high school class reunion. I can't believe fifty years have passed.

The other night, I got together with 5 other women who were on the synchronized swimming team back then. What a hoot! Today, we're having a pep fest (remember that old term) in our high school gym. Our basketball team won the state championship in our senior year, so we're having a basketball game complete with members of our cheer leading squad and dance line. My husband, who is retired emergency physician, will be standing by with a defibrillator, just in case.

There will be a casual get-together tonight, golf tomorrow morning and dinner tomorrow night. I imagine we'll all need a couple days to recover after all that. It's fun to see old friends and celebrate making it this far.

Linda, I'm sorry you're sick! I hope you feel better soon.

I plan to spend tomorrow holed up in the sewing room. I haven't sewn in several weeks, either, due to vacation then FIL's wedding and family visiting last weekend. I want to make 2 more minis for my guild.

Sunday's my birthday and we're going to SeaWorld. :) If we decide to go after lunch I'll probably sew some more in the morning; if we decide to go early I'll probably be wiped out from the heat and just want to nap when we get home! LOL

Thank you bunches Bobby for making a tutorial for me! The puff quilt I saw back in my college days used much larger squares like about 8" x 8" after stuffing so am thinking I will use a larger size something like that. Thanks for letting me know that I am suppose to only pleat the top square. I do like to sew by hand a lot, but I don't know, I may when making the 3 sides might would use the machine and then just hand sew the 4th side. Hubby is wanting a lighthouse quilt and he wants a quilt with a little more weight to it - he said my last quilt felt like a summer quilt cause it was so lightweight. So am thinking I might could do a large lighthouse pieced block in the center of the quilt and then do large puff squares around it and stuff them so that it give the quilt more weight, that's what I am thinking about doing along the lines of a puff quilt, I don't know I will have to give it some thought. Thank you for sharing with me how you make your puff quilt, I appreciate that a bunch! Kate wow it looks great! And it's so neat and tidy right now. Please post a pic when you get it all fill with your fabric and stuff, can't wait to see it then. Thank you for sharing your quilt/sewing room remodel with us, it's really cool to see. And it's inspiring, gets me thinking about my "future" quilt room. Well my weekend did not go quite as planned, but had a good weekend. Went shopping with my mom and had a good visit with her Saturday morning and lunch. Then Saturday afternoon a close family friend's grandparents have passed away during the past year and so they asked us to come help clean out some of his grandma's sewing stuff and then wants me to keep, donate, or toss items as I see fit. So Saturday afternoon I helped dig part of his grandma's garden and then helped clean out sewing stuff out of the shed and then brought all that stuff home and went through it all on Sunday, hubby took some stuff to Goodwill this afternoon. There is fabric from our friend's grandma and his great-grandma that seems a little fragile so I am not going to wash it, but instead I plan to make large quilt squares out of the vintage fabric and frame the quilt blocks for our friend, his mom, and his sister. It's been a humbling experience sorting everything and it's been interesting seeing what she used in her sewing such as notions and fabrics, our friend's grandma did a lot of clothes sewing and their are patterns that are so old they only have 50cents marked as their price on them and I would like to frame some of them. Our friend's mom asked me and hubby to come back later this week when she cleans out her mom's bedroom aka sewing room, so it's just very humbling. The only other time in my life I have ever had to go through a deceased person's belongings was when one of my grandmothers passed in 2000, so helping our close family friend with his grandma's stuff kind of reminds me of my grandma ..., and along those lines, my Mom brought me some old quilt blocks that my grandma had made before she passed in 2000, so I have not decided yet if I am going to frame those blocks or whether I want to make a wall hanging or lap quilt out of them, there is just a few of them, but I feel really fortunate to have them. Yes, yes, yes!! Happy dance, yes! After having an exchange student for most of the month, it is good to be back to normal (if there is such a thing!) Last night I finished the binding on a DP16 patch & it is ready to wash. Today I sandwiched a UFO, quilted it & have the binding attached ready to hand stitch. I also finished a couple more of the "retreat goodies" I'm taking - need to get the final count of people so I know how many I need. (sounds mysterious, doesn't it???) I have also been trying out pattern I want to make but the template in the book is wrong & I am having trouble figuring out what to do. It is a fan block with 10 blades - finished block size is supposed to be 8". I have made 2 practice blocks & neither of them is right -AAARGHHH! I want to cut all the pieces & take it to the retreat but at this rate, I will be coming up with something else. The test ones may become potholders. I am also going to make a new rice bag for DS - he asked for one for his Oct 17 birthday - but could he have it early ??? He has been here this week and heads home tomorrow afternoon. I'm kind of sewing. I saw a QOV someone made that I really liked. I think it's a quarter Log Cabin block...it might be called a half but, technically would be a quarter. So, I drew it out from what I could see of a block...still don't know if it's how they did it, but it looks good to me. Made four of them (10 1/2" unfinished), sewed them together and I have a Log Cabin Pinwheel. This one is blue and white, and I have strips cut for red and white. I really don't care for sewing Log Cabins, but since these strips are 2 1/2" and it isn't a true Log Cabin, I'm ok with it....for now. LindaOH, I'm sorry you're having health problems. Keep us updated, please. Lois, There were a few quilt shops I was able to visit while in Alaska, and I'd say you are a strong person to be able to walk out with a small pattern. lol Were you able to get your fish shipped home? Robbi, Hair bows must be in vogue as Salijo is making them, too. But she makes them for little ones. Theresa, Hips and knees......good thing they've learned how to replace them, eh? SharonG/FL

Hello, all - we are back from our trip to Richmond, Williamsburg and DC. We've unpacked and done a few other chores, and are ready to settle in for what will hopefully be our last night w/o air conditioning. I don't remember if I posted that the A/C croaked on Thursday before we left on Saturday. We were able to make quick plans to board the kitties at the vet's office, and have made arrangements with our A/C guy to install the new unit tomorrow. It's strange being here with no kitties! But we couldn't leave them in a closed up house without air conditioning. It's 87 now at nearly 10 pm. We had a great time visiting with our friends and my sister! Our friends' son is our godson. I made a quilt for him when he was really young (3 or 4 years old) and his mom says he still uses it! We were looking at quilts in a museum at Colonial Williamsburg when she told me that. He's starting his junior year of high school soon, so I told her maybe I'll make him another quilt for HS graduation. At least I don't have to rush! LOL Donna

Linda, you know you're sick when you don't even want to quilt! I hope you and your dh get well soon.

Have fun at your reunion, Lois!! I missed my 30 year recently. I wish I had gone.

I got my new monthly shipment for my Dear Jane, so I hope to get a lot of those done this weekend. I'm also in the mood to do some cooking. My tomato plants are finally producing more than I can eat, so I thought I might put up some salsa. We'll see how that goes :-)

Today I have been cutting fabric for my September Lotto block as I was too anxious to sit still for very long as I was eagerly waiting on the day to end - it was my son's first day back at school - and yes it went very well am happy to say. Just went and collected a few seeds in the garden really too hot to be outside. I plan to hand-quilt my Grandma's quilt this weekend, do some crocheting on my son's Ripple afgan - both will hopefully be Christmas presents - and keep cutting fabric for my Lotto block - 1 to mail to the swap, 1 for me to keep and 1 to mail to a friend. Well off to get something done. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Linda: Hope you feel better soon along w/ your DH. And Lois...50th HS reunion...well that is something to celebrate! I went to my 30th, it was a small class of 100 girls 30 years ago, it's really a small group now.
Birthday Girl...Enjoy your day.
I hope to get some blocks completed for the Sept.lotto and prep another completed quilt top for FMQ...but the weather may call me outside to clean up the garden...will see how it goes!

Thanks for the get well wishes. I hope this goes away soon. Next Sat. (25th) is our 45th high school class reunion. I have been helping with the plans and really want to go see some friends that I haven't seen for 45 years. I've reconnected with some of them through facebook. I found that one friend is also a quilter. Can't wait to see her.

Yes, I hope to. I had made August and September's Lotto blocks early in spring. I fell in love with them and used both in quilts. Managed to make three more of August and September's. I fell in love with two of September's AGAIN. I'm either going to have to pony up and send them, or make two more for the lotto. rofl. Either way I decide, it's a given I have more of September's to make. That's how most of my quilts get born. I don't plan on making them, they just jump out and bite me.

Tonight I finished 2 blocks for the birthday exchange and will be mailing them out tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get in more quilting this weekend, but we'll see how it goes. My only real wish for this weekend is that the plumbing doesn't leak again (and it better not, by golly, what with everything I did to it last weekend!) and the cats don't get into the walls again (had to rescue Bump when he decided to check out the construction last Sunday). Now, if we could just get some big ol' thunderstorms on Sunday, I'd be pleased as punch! (where did that saying come from?)

When my package arrived yesterday from my online shopping last weekend~I dropped everything and was able to squeeze in about an hour of sewing before dinner. Yay!

Linda - I hope you are feeling better & your DH is improving.

Linda I hope you and your hubby get to feeling better soon. My hubby is doing well except for being sore and hasn't gotten his energy levels back to 100% after his back surgery. We thankfully got about 1/3 of an inch of rain, better than nothing though. I have gotten about 60 hours worth of hand-quilting done on my Grandma's quilt in the past 4 weeks, hoping to have it done by Christmas. I have the bottom row of blocks and strips/smaller blocks above that bottom row completed and now am working on the 2nd row of blocks (from the bottom up). I also got to work on my son's Ripple crochet afgan, again hoping to have it done by Christmas. And I got fabric cut for my September Lotto block - 1 for the swap, 1 for me, and 1 for my friend Christy - and I got my swap block sewn just now and I like how it turned out. So had a very productive weekend. :-)

Thank you all for the birthday wishes! We had a good time at Sea World yesterday, and only got wet when an afternoon thunderstorm blew up. Hubby grilled steaks for dinner.

Spent some time this weekend working on finishing my round robin project for the quilt show - don't want my friends disappointed in me for not getting it finished!

Also, spent some time organizing my sewing room: getting my apparel fabric measured and labeled. Found some pieces I had forgotten about....Yay! "free" fabric, LOL! Now I actually have space on my cutting table to cut! What a novel idea!
