Could you have accidently gotten sea salt?

That's strange.

I've always had Morton's on hand, haven't needed to buy any recently to be aware of a change. Does it work in your salt shaker OK...

I'm asking because I'm really struggling with pepper in the last S&P shakers I bought. My regular grinds of pepper won't shake out :( And that's - Two pair, DH loses patience, gets up from the table and gets the utility set off the stove.

The same thing happened to my latest container of Morton's Salt and then I noticed the container had a different appearance about it. There on the side of the box was the message, Sea Salt. Yup, Morton's Sea Salt tends to have larger and uneven sized clumps of salt. The stuff will hardly pass trough a standard salt shaker lid. There is a slight difference in taste also. I guess they are competing with another brand that advertises Sea Salt with a different flavor and hints its better for you.

For pepper, I use pepper corns in a mill. That eliminates the shaker drama.

Morton has always sold sea salt...it's clearly labled, just like their Kosher salt. If the iodized salt is 'different', it might be due to an issue at the source or the manufacturer.

I use Kosher salt for everything. I haven't put a salt shaker on the table for twenty years.

not all salt is from the sea and morton has several locations for "salt mines" in the usa/canada...so if one mine has closed, it might be from another area?

I'm wondering if they're substituting sea salt for the normal mined salt. I bought some sea salt once and mistakenly bought coarse sea salt. But it was plainly marked. I just didn't pay close enough attention. I doubt it would be kosher salt.

Their response is very suspicious and strange.

Besides my regular salt, I also keep sea salt and kosher salt on hand for recipes calling for such. I haven't put salt or pepper shakers on the table for years. Americans consume way too much salt.

I always buy Morton's salt; haven't needed a new box for a while, but I hope when I do I can still get the same kind.

I dislike sea salt. I have stopped buying Nabisco Premium Saltine Crackers, which I have bought "forever" because they are now using sea salt. BUMMER!! I wish these companys would quit ruining the old stand bys.

Interesting.....just heard a week or so ago the use of iodized salt is way down because most people prefer Kosher salt for use in cooking.
The result is many people have reduced levels of iodine in their system.

I re-checked the salt container: it's just iodized salt, not sea salt.

Morz8, I have had problems with pepper when I buy too fine a grind. It clogs up in the finer-holed table shaker, but shakes easier in the stovetop shaker.

I'm going to contact Morton's again & ask when the previous formation will be available again & how I can tell the difference in the two formations in the store. Maybe as susanjf suggested, a mine closed & they had to make do with other mines' salts. Who knows...

I use regular salt for cooking.

Enjoy Kosher salt for table seasoning.

Why do people use Kosher salt ... does it taste different?

Morton's sells three types of salt, table which is iodized, kosher and sea. Below is the site.
We need to use table more often as we need the iodine for a healthy thyroid.

I remember Alton Brown on Food TV saying he uses only kosher salt in cooking. Yayagal, there's also pickling salt. And of course rock salt for spreading on ice.

I don't know why it's known as Kosher salt, but the granules are larger/coarser and cling better to some foods during cooking. Many people (including me) use it for salted margarita glass rims instead of buying pricier "margarita" salt.

"Kosher" salt is short for koshering salt. It got the name because the size of the particles was right for koshering meat (extract the blood) to meet the kosher dietary requirements

Kosher salt and sea salt is not iodized. You need iodine in your diet.

I had been cutting way back on salt as I thought it was healthier. I have hypo-thyroidism and was feeling really bad. I needed more salt for the iodine level. Once I got that back up, I felt greatly improved.
