all drawers in base cabinets? double sink?
Comments (10)I store just about any type of item you can think of in drawers...utensils, pots/pans, toaster, mixers, food processor, wraps & baggies, foils, extension cords & other electrical-related items, bread, linens, Tupperware, water bottles, mixing bowls, tableware, junk, candles and other misc stuff, cookie cutters/rolling pin/sifter, ... The list goes on! No, you probably cannot store a KA stand mixer in a drawer, but I don't want to...it's a little too heavy to be lifting up anyway (regardless of base cab storage type) so I store it in one of the corners on the counter. I don't think most mixer lifts are sturdy enough to mix right on them so I would still have to lift it up to the counter from a lift. (Plus, flour all over and with the cabinet door open, inside the cabinet! Along w/anything else that spills...countertops have an overhang for a reason...they protect the interior of cabinets/drawers from spills by covering them and directing spills (liquid & solid) away from the cabinets and down to the floor.) Regardless of your decision on drawers vs ROTS, get full-extension...it's a must! Soft-close is also nice, but it's a nice to have. Actually, I might consider not getting soft-close for ROTS b/c the slight delay in closing (as the drawer/tray is gently closed) means having to wait to close the door(s). BTW...I have one cabinet w/ROTS (Pet Center) and all others are drawers. If I had it to do over, that one cabinet would be a pullout (like a trash pullout), with an interior drawer box. (I rarely use the top ROTS in the Pet Center.) That cabinet has soft-close just like the drawers...and it is a noticeable wait for the ROTS to close b/f I can close the doors (2 doors on it). So, I speak from experience....See MoreCabinets on cheapskate budget...ideas please!
Comments (26)I just want to echo Rosie here. RTA (ready to assemble) kitchens like IKEA and Barker are very, very simple to assemble. Purposefully so. And they don't require any saws or anything, unless you are trying to modify a cabinet you ordered so it becomes more customizable for some special purpose. And you can find installers, if you don't want to DYI the installation. In fact, it is often said that having great installers makes all the difference. Just to give you a sense of what my numbers look like so far in my custom comparison, IKEA's cabinets came to below 5K for my kitchen/DR area (8K including all appliances/fan hood from IKEA), Barker came in about 10K for painted cabinets and estimates from cabinet companies (low end so far) have ranged from 16-19K. I'm not done comparison shopping, but that is how things are looking so far. Another option people do from time to time is buy the IKEA boxes and buy doors through Barkers, Scheers, or several other on-line companies that specialize in creating wood, acrylic or veneer doors and panels to go specifically on IKEA cabinets....See MoreWhat would you do with an extra 15-inch base cabinet?
Comments (20)Is GardenWeb awesome or what? Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who posted their thoughts. I saw the paper towel holder thread and think I can find another place for mine. I like the idea of U-shaped holders for vertical storage - was planning for that over the fridge but this would be handier. rosie/desertsteph's ideas would work for that. Why not a 15" drawer base? Well, all other base cabinets are drawers and I've pretty much figured out where everything will go already, so not sure I need yet another one. jakabedy reading about your experience and seeing your pictures was really helpful, esp the KA mixer. I was going to put mine across the kitchen in another cabinet but it would be so much more useful to have it available in this corner. Do you think the pull-out would hold a KA mixer and a Cuisinart? Or would that be too heavy? Thanks for the Hafele link, Angie - lots of interesting ideas from that manufacturer. As far as the filler goes, to the left is 1" filler to match the width of the corner cabinet's door, then another 2" to allow for the pullout to extend without hitting the corner cabinet's pulls. The 1" filler next to the range is based on experiences with my range (Electrolux) posted on the appliance forum. There's a bit of a bulb out to the front control panel and an inch filler on each side was highly recommended. Making the filler one or two inches narrower doesn't really help because the next bigger cabinet size would be an 18-inch one, and there's definitely not enough space for that. I'm off to Ikea to get the base cabinet and look at the drawer and vertical storage options. Thanks again everyone....See MoreNeed Advice on Luxury Kitchen and Breakfast Nook Remodel Design
Comments (301)So after following along and reading and reading all the good advice and then OP's responses I did myself wonder a couple times (with a few head slaps really????) - are you reading AND THINKING about the advice posted or just posting more "I am totally out of control help me right now" questions that seemed to not take into consideration any of the advice. It was more I have to have 10', I have to have it large, I have to have it.....HELP regardless of the solutions posted. I kind of started to wonder if you are a college student in design school trying to get someone to draw up a kicking design for your homework assignment and it was the 11th hour. But I am no design expert just a learner myself. If nothing else there are some good designs in this thread with lots of elements that many would enjoy (well maybe not the topiary IN the kitchen). Oh wait a minute - THE TOPIARY IS THE SHRINE! You are all set!...See MoreCEFreeman
