Range Hood - Stainless Steel or Custom??

We are currently planning our kitchen for a new house and are having a horrible time deciding on the range hood. We initially chose a built-in stainless steel range hood for a 48 Wolf range. Now after looking at a hundred or so magazines and books, I have a horrible feeling that we should go custom. The kitchen is relatively large (25"x16") with 10 ft ceilings - there will be a lot of stainless in the kitchen between the range, a 48 inch fridge, dishwasher, etc and I am worried that with the hood, it will be too much. I just don't want to walk into the kitchen for the next 10 years and hate the hood!

It is hard to give an opinion without knowing what style of kitchen that you have. Stainless steel hoods can be gorgeous and very sleek looking.

You might want to look into having a custom hood built built by a carpenter that could be finished with a skip troweled stucco finish. You could then use the same tile that you have on your backsplash as a band around the bottom of the hood. Make the hood with swooped sides and front for a French country style kitchen.

Consider getting a hood enclosure from the cabinet manufacture that matches your cabinets. Use decorative brackets or corbels underneath for added style.

Consider having an interior designer come with some sketches for a custom enclosure.

The above ideas will require a hood insert instead of a stainless unit that has the blower built in. Check local codes as they relate to what is required to ventilate a 48" rang. Some city's require a separate heating and cooling system when the blower is 600 cfm or greater.

How about stainless with glass? My kitchen is finished now but I don't have an updated picture. I will work on it. My range hood is a cavaliere and I love it because it was a lot shorter than most range hoods and I have 8 ft ceilings. It is quiet and functions well. Can a stainless steel range hood by powder coated?

With the right powder coater, sure. But if matching is important, you match the wall color to the hood results, not the other way around. This will not be cheap.

Thank you for all your opinions. @Patricia. As it turns out, we are doing a Bosch dishwasher and a samsung microwave, but the refrigerator, range and hood are GE Profile. After much scouring of the internet I actually found the exact application I was looking to do with the GE range I'm looking at with a hood from a different brand. What do those of you with the trained design eye think?

You can certainly tile your range hood, but I would consult with a designer to get the details right and hire the best tile guy/gal in your area. This tile design was planned carefully and done by a skilled tiler.
