North Carolina Quilt Retreat (4th Annual)

October 7-10, 2010

(Monday Oct. 11 is Columbus Day, for those that get the holiday)

The 2010 Quilt Retreat will be held the weekend of October 7-10, 2010 at the YMCA Camp Cheerio, Roaring Gap, NC in the northwest corner. Camp Cheerio is a summer camp with multiple buildings, lodges, dining hall, and conference center. It offers us terrific housing rates with meals included and conference space at no additional cost. Meals are offered buffet style, with salad bar at both lunch & dinner. We do not select the menus, but for three years it has proven to be memorable, and not your typical camp fare.

We will be staying in the Millis Lodge. Each of the 22 rooms has a private bath with linens and towels provided. There are a variety of room styles (queens, queen w/bunk beds, twins) which will be issued on a first come, first requested basis.

Sharing of rooms does not alter each individual's expenses, but might be necessary depending on the number of quilters who come. [There are other campers in camp this weekend & I'm not sure if the Lodge is being utilized for them at all.]

We will be quilting on the 2nd floor of the Sloan Center which offers a wonderful view of the valley below, and a delightful breeze! There are a lot of activities (aside from quilting) for campers or spouses including hiking, canoing, swimming (if you're brave enough in Oct.), horseback riding, archery, etc.

Dinner Thursday, breakfast/lunch/dinner Friday & Saturday, snack Saturday night and breakfast/lunch Sunday are included in your price. In past years we've packed up our quilt space prior to lunch on Sunday. The first year we ate lunch in camp, one year we got bagged lunches of cold cut sandwiches which many of us took with us on the trip home, and last year some of us ate in our quilting space until we felt like leaving.

Weather:

I believe the temperature in October on top of the mountain will be brisk and cool, usually 10 degrees below that in Greensboro or Winston-Salem. Snow in NC is not likely in October, and hopefully there will still be beautiful color in the trees.

There are tons of things to do vacation-wise in the VA/NC area. The camp is only 10 minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The closest airport is the Piedmont Triad International Airport between Greensboro and High Point, NC.

Tentative Itinerary: More details to be provided/planned as we get closer. Workshop/project ideas will be developed as we get closer to Retreat, or we can just spend the entire weekend working on our own projects. There are a couple of possible field trip opportunities if we choose as well.

There should be room with big tables if anyone would like help with sandwiching & basting a quilt.
