I have a Speed Queen washer. Stainless steel tub with no bells and whistles. I've had it a couple of years now. It's great! Have fun with yours.

I have a Speed Queen too which I selected last year after reading a lot of reviews. I was impressed with the stainless steel tub--very few machines have them anymore. I am very satisfied so far.

I hope Queenie turns out to be as good and loyal a friend as Greenie.

I have "heard" that with new government regulations that even top loaders do not fill up with as much water as they used to. Has anyone with a newer Speed Queen noticed this?... will be anxious to hear from Cynic on this issue...Please do let us know about that....

good decision I had speed queen set that lasted for many years and was still working ok when we updated. I gave them to a friend. They make a great product.

Good point dbfirewife. I was wondering about that, and forgot to ask but I did find a YouTube video on how to adjust it if it happens that way. Pretty simple, just a screw adjustment. I've looked at some of the videos of the Speed Queen running loads and they seemed to fill up all the way but they didn't say what model year they were and I didn't pay attention to how old the videos were. I'll know in a couple days and I'll let you know.

Thanks Cynic...it will be good to know for future reference and my sister in law is considering one... I have a Samsung front loader and I watched a video on u-tube how to adjust the amount of water. I have not done it, I am actually satisfied with the amount of water mine fills with. Occasionally if I am washing a large item I just take a pitcher and pour more water in. I do remember on the older top loaders if it didn't have as much water as you wanted you could just twist the knob over to the right and hold it and it would keep filling till you turned the knob loose. I bet your unit that just died was that way.

I hope my Speed Queen outlives me. I love the stainless steel...so easy to clean.

If your new washer is controlled by a conventional drum switch run by a clock motor, baring a hit by lightening, it should last a very long time, possibly as long as the other mechanicals of the machine.

As to the fill level, you may have a knob to adjust the fill level. These days, most top loaders control the fill level with a pressure switch; It measures the pressure of the water depth. Some old machines in the past use timed fill with variable and poor results because the water flow may not be constant. It will vary depending on water pressure and the valve opening to the water hoses and the fill level will be inconsistent.

The pressure switch is fairly sensitive since it is working with low pressure. It can be fooled. As the water nears its fill level, if you should throw in some more clothes and happen to push those down into the water, that action will cause a pressure pulse and can trigger the switch to stop the fill. If this happens, reset the switch to resume filling. On my GE, the fill switch is reset by turning the fill level knob to the far right, and then return it to the desired fill level. Your machine may be different. Look for the reset procedure

there are so few companies to choose from, anymore... whirlpool covers several brands, including the once giant, maytag...

now my front loader duet does use less water and soap, but very happy with outcome..on some clothes i do used the double rinse...

I remember the knob that firewife mentioned......I too had one that I would hold to increase the water levels.

Since our landlady increased the price of the washer, we've been taking our laundry to the laundromat.It's not at all inconvenient, it's just down the block.

She increased ours to $3 and said that it was the same price as the laundromat.

Of course, she's not correct, the laundromat is $3 for a front loader that is a double load.. And their top-loaders are still $2.

Things seem to come out clean enough I guess, but I've noticed a musty smell sometimes, even though they are always dried outside. And watching it wash......they're fascinating, aren't they? How do they clean when they just go around and around in a clump?? The bedding is a ball, as are the towels.

The whites I still do here, because they have the hot water turned off at the laundromat, which I'm not at all impressed with.

Of course she noticed the lack of money in the machine, and saw the clothes on the line. She asked if I had a washer inside the apartment. She wouldn't have believed that I would go to the laundromat. She did say that I was doing laundry every day from the amount of money in the machine. I had to explain the discrepancy of money (she thought the price was $1).

So she's upset because she assumed (incorrectly t)hat I was doing too much laundry,so she raised the price, and now she's upset because I'm not using at at all.

Jasdip, you should tell her you'll come back if she drops the price to $1. :)

Yes Maytag really imploded and Whirlpool bought them out and made them respectable again. They're gaining back some of their lost market share. Maytag took a great product and went cheap and proved what happens to so many companies. The only thing of *any* value with Maytag when they were bought out was the name and the reputation was pretty much lost. GE did a similar thing but they saw what they were doing and brought back *some* better quality.

Maytag was a conglomerate of names too. Norge, Amana, JennAir, I think Admiral and others and now are together with all the variants of Whirlpool. Lots of different names but all the same company and many of them are basically the same unit, rebranded.

The previous owner left her Speed Queen washer when we moved into our house in 1981. It lasted many years with only one small repair, a "solenoid" replacement.When it finally broke down in 2001, , we couldn't find another SQ, so we bought a Sears Kenmore. It's okay but has needed a lot of repairs over the years.

While waiting for the delivery I downloaded the owners manual and it answered the question on the water level. Here's what it said:
"NOTE: Starting January 2009, the Department
of Energy (DOE) mandated new efficiency
standards which resulted in reduced water levels
in the topload washer level."

So until I get a chance to adjust it, I'll have to use the reset I imagine.

I thought so.. I think it went to 12" max of water ... so if you want your clothes covered in water you will sure have to adjust it....I hope it has a reset. I am assuming it has an agitator?... can you imagine how hard that would be on clothes without a full tub of water?.. Unless you washed like two pair of jeans.

Yes it has a traditional agitator. However the actual amount of water doesn't seem to be down all that much. I'd guess 2"-3" from the top. It takes less than a minute I'd guess to top it off with the reset position. You hold that on and it starts filling water, and this baby is "Speedy" at filling with water. As I've seen so far I'm not in a big hurry to adjust it. I've run several loads now and all seems well. Getting used to the differences. First couple loads were inadvertently run on Delicate setting. I took a magic marker and highlighted the indentation on the knob to show where it's pointing. And with older eyes, the smaller print is a bit harder to read, otherwise, I'm very pleased with the choice so far. The other thing I noticed was the stainless steel tub makes for better light reflection in there. Easier to see into the tub. And I really like the extra rinse option and the pre-soak option. I had to do those manually on the old one.
