questions on installation of 36' GE Induction cooktop

My cooktop did not come with the baffle that the instructions indicate is needed on the bottom of the cooktop. What does this do, is it necessary, and could I install the cooktop today and then add the baffle when I can get one from GE? Also, the instructions indicate that 2" of clearance are needed on the left side between the cooktop and the cabinet. Why is this and what could the problem be if I only have about 7/8" of clearance? If heat is the problem, could I put fireboard or fireboard or some other nonflamable material between the cabinet edge and the cooktop?
