Scrappy Trips Around the World

The pattern came from Bonnie Hunter and I'm just as pleased as punch with how it turned out. It cannot technically be called a Quilt of Valor as it doesn't meet the size requirements (off by an inch), but that's ok. Beverly did an awesome job of quilting stars, choosing the backing and putting on the binding for me. I don't know how I'd get anything completed without her expertise and friendship. The presentation to Major Abbi is scheduled to take place next Monday night at Pizza Hut where a group of family and friends will gather with her before she goes back to her place of deployment. I plan to post a picture of that after it happens. She doesn't know about the quilt but her mother does and is on pins and needles and can't wait to see it in person.

Well I'm just plain bummed. I got fabric cut, applique patterns cut out and ironed on other pieces and started my Saturday "sitting" job with my newest bed quilt project that had some applique on it, my favorite to do. I was just so pleased I'd found the perfect color and came home with two sample blocks done. I put them up on the design wall and stood back - and they look awful. So, I spent the morning organizing all that into a package to go in a drawer. I'm a bit at odds now so will just work on lotto block samples to cover March and April. At least that is working out well and I like them. I guess it's time to drag out the UFOs. I'm off to Oregon for a week this Thurs. so that might get me new visions, along with a stop along the way at a favorite shop.

In regards to the "tubes of fabric, cut into strips, and then unsewn one-by-one" technique that Faye mentioned, Bonnie Hunter has several designs that use this technique on her Quiltville website. See the Special Note at the bottom of the Quitlville Home page for copyright usage. Basically, she gives you permission to use her web site patterns to teach classes (and other uses); she only asks that you might consider making an extra block and send it to her to include in her charity quilts. Awwwww...shucks....thanks K8! I went to the Folk Center near Asheville back in the 80's and saw a Sunny Windows quilt that I just loved. After the boys and I moved to Greensboro, I took a beginners' quilting class at the local quilt shop and made several blocks toward a sampler quilt. This was in the Dark Ages, dontcha know, and we used cardboard backed with sandpaper to make paper templates - rotary cutters and mats hadn't been invented yet! That first quilt was so awful it's a wonder I stuck with it. But I did prevail and next made my own Sunny Windows quilt with 3 fabrics - 2 blue prints and 1 yellow solid. It now hangs in my bedroom and I still love it, even though the poor thing is so plain. I don't get to take as many classes now as I once did, but I want to take more classes maybe when I retire....if ever. Teresa

When I posted on Aug 2nd I had some grand plans for what I was going to accomplish this month. We're pretty close to half way though and I don't have any more of the GN's quilt blocks done. I have worked on the GD's a little and feel good about the progress there. My big news is that I finally received my Quilts of Valor back from the longarm quilter!!! Yea!!! She had them 7 weeks, which was 4 weeks longer than it took me to make them. She did a fabulous job on one - large meanders and beautiful stars, with a few more detailed designs in the corners. I'm not crazy about the other one - WAY too many designs with little soldiers marching, giant eagles, etc. But I hope the soldier that receives it likes it! These were my first two QOV and my first experience sending something off to a stranger to quilt. I've finished the binding and sewn on the label so now I'm just waiting to find out where to send them. Kate

The backing and the binding are both perfect - so is the label.
I'm sure she will be touched.

Please give my Thanks to Major Abbi and her family for what they all sacrifice for us.

Sharon did a great job with this one and I am more than happy to help out. The colors are brighter than they appear in the picture. I can't wait to see pictures of the presentation.

Thank you, ladies. I love to make patriotic quilts and be able to contribute something to show my appreciation for our service members. I think this one might mean a bit more to me because it's going to someone I know.

I made 2 pillowcases and reversed the fabric of the body and cuff, so if Abbi took one back to Haiti with her, her DH would have one similar and they would have a connection. Yeah, I know.....sappy, eh?

I like sappy! Scrappy, too. Does that make me a scrappy sap? Oh good grief! I need to be locked in a sewing room with a little pass through door for fabric and food. I can picture it now........
