Now about the quilt. That one is right up my alley. You did a super job picking out the materials, and what's not to love about such a cute little scrappy? I particularly like the white sashing and then that border.

Hey, good job, and I see you used up a lot of small fabric pieces! It looks very pretty and warm, and that border with all the little triangles is cute; it must have taken a lot of time and pains to do. Who is going to get to sleep under it?

I hope you won't mind my making a suggestion, since you call yourself a semi-newbie. From what I can see, your quilting is kind of far apart--unless this was a sort of quilt-as-you-go thing, and you only did a bit of extra stitching on the top when it was done. I know that some battings say you can space it rather far apart, but with washing and wear and tear, that can cause a problem with the stitching that holds the pieces together. Your quilt will last longer (fewer seams pulling open, less raveling on the wrong side, etc.), if the quilting is closer together, maybe you could do some in the opposite direction.

l really like it. What a great way to use up scrap strips. I would agree that you might want to add a bit more quilting if this is going to be used.

It's very pretty. You did well on both quilt and posting your photo. When I saw all those bias edges I shudder. You've got guts!

I quilted each stripe (in the ditch) and then I turned it and quilted sideways (I know that's not right term-LOL), but I see the point you are making. I should have stitched in a diamond fashion going in the other direction as well. Since I only do straight lines when it comes to quilting I didn't even think of how a quilt has to go through washings and wear and tear. Duh. I'm can't wait to get my courage up to do FMQ. I want to so bad and I'm thinking if I start with a place mat first and just practice that would be the way to go. I guess that should be my next project.

This one is what I call a "couch quilt" and it covers me as I sit on my couch with my popcorn and watch a movie or two. It is bigger than a lap quilt, but smaller than a twin. I like to add a little extra border to my laps quilts, it adds more "cuddling power". (Not that I have anyone, furry or otherwise to cuddle with.) ~LOL~

Great quilt and good job posting your first pic! I love the colors in that quilt.

Now.....you need to learn about "cropping" your pics to remove all the background stuff. And might I suggest that the next time you put your quilt on the light background carpet so we can really see the entire design, binding and all.

It will get easier each time you photograph your work!

I really like it. I love scrappy and your border is top notch.
I think that if you've stitched each strip and with the diagonal that you have already done it would be ok if you just added a few more rows on the diangonal even though you have finished the binding, if you feel the need for more quilting.
It's a great early effort and I am proud you shared it.

Susan: I have only ever done one FMQ, and it was a lap-sized quilt made of blocks from a swap. This is one of my bad character flaws: I hate to do small practice pieces, so I tend to jump in with the big one and then sometimes have to redo things! There were places in my FM quilting that won't bear close inspection, but on the whole it looks good and I am happy with it. You know what they say: If you were galloping by on a horse and wouldn't notice the defect in the quilt, then it doesn't matter!

Congratulations on your first picture posting accomplishment.

I love the scrappy pattern, it's a great variation of strip quilting. And the outer border is wonderful!

Hope to see more pictures as you progress from semi-newbie to seasoned professional.

I remember her helping someone who wanted to know how to post a picture so I did a search on our forum and sure nuf' there were her directions!! You made it so easy so thanks again.

Clarosietoo I got the pattern from "Super Simple Strips" by Nancy Smith and Lynda Mulligan. There are about 16 quilts in this book all using strips of material (not pre-cut strips) with different looks and styles. I had originally seen this quilt on one of my favorite Blogs (Sisters Choice). I took one look and knew I would make it someday, (the Blog referenced the book she used to make it). I found the book at Amazon.

I cut out strips from my favorite fabrics and of course you could use scrappy scraps as well. I hope this gives you an idea of something you may want to do sometime as well. It was really fun. The little triangles were easy to cut and piece because they came from the ends of the strips when I put them together. The hardest part was pressing them open!!! Thank goodness for starch (something I learned on this forum).
