I don't know if they still mention it in the literature, but years ago it was pointed out to me that Roundup can damage plants near where it was sprayed. For example, spraying under a bush may cause damage to the bush. It is best to spray in the evening when temperatures are cooling. If a person must apply Round Up in an established bed, they may want to use an artists paint brush. Another trick is to cut the bottom out of a cup and put that over the nozzle so that the spray pattern is further restricted.

Around here the iris society digs in July for their annual sale. I looked up on line to see the proper time & there is completely different information, maybe it depends on the area of the country. I've read 2 weeks after blooming, late summer, early fall. The site I tend to go with said any time after blooming, it works for me. I know I have divided even during bloom up til November here. There are some iris that just don't like to be moved, & I know which ones they are now, but generally they all have bloomed the following spring. The ones I got the least amount of bloom on were the November ones.

I had that exact pink and brown tile in my last house. I must have tried 10 different decorating schemes in there; the pink is hard to coordinate with. I ended up replacing the vanity and used plain white 4x4 tile on it. That looked okay, and might look okay over your shower surround. A little awkward, but okay. I could also envision just using some sheet formica up there, well caulked; if you want to do something cool, get "boomerang" or some other 50s-inspired pattern and play up the kitsch factor. I discovered that it was going to be a big challenge to replace the bath/shower fixtures (mine were brass, very corroded - ick!). It sounded like I would have to rip out tile to get to the valve and plumbing inner workings, as you can't just pop on new handles and tub spouts very easily. But you can replace the shower head relatively easily. As far as figuring out whether it's structurally sound, I guess I'd go into the crawl space and try to inspect the floor under the tub and toilet. Poke at the wood with a screw driver and see what happens. If you replace your toilet, you'll have a chance to see if any horrors lie underneath - in mine, the subfloor was not in great shape (thanks to a previous owner who liked carpet in her bathrooms :) If you don't see rot, I would guess your bathroom will last a long time. I've read in the New York Times that tile from the 50s was made really strong. (I'm attaching a fun link you've probably already visited, but just in case...) one trick ... is to move part.. and leave part ... then .. if you do lose the bloom cycle on what you moved ... the part you left should still bloom .. and you can move that at the end of bloom next summer ... generally speaking .... if you can move things in dormancy ... you can move them any time during dormancy... from fall thru winter ... and that would be on plants that are fully dormant ... lets say .. in a state of suspended animation ... but other things ... even though they appear dormant to your eye ... they might be doing things .. in the ground.... where you cant see ... and messing with them.. when they are doing that work .. might interfere with the natural cycle .. in this case.. the next bloom ... an example might be lilac.. which in fall .. are setting buds for the next spring bloom.. so if you go pruning them.. in fall or winter.. giving them a haircut ... you are basically cutting off the bloom for next season ... that said ... you gotta do.. what you gotta do.. when you have the time to do it ... and frankly.. losing a bloom cycle is not the end of the world .... all other things done properly ... stuff is not going to die.. because you were slightly out of the season cycles .. the best example of this would be some building project which required you to just move everything... when the project might be done ... anyway ... the forecast for my MI .. is single digits F for the next week .. with lows in the -10's .. perhaps i wish i could go do some digging out in the garden .... and who would care what the result was .... lol... ken
