RECIPE: Lost my Good Housekeeping cookbook need recipe!!

I lost this when we moved. I haven't made this for a couple of years and have forgotten the recipe.

It is a tossed salad on a platter (or maybe just lettuce, with (I think crab-meat/?shrimp maybe even both. It has sliced or quarted hard-boiled eggs, and It is served with a dressing that is Thousand Island, Russian or something very similar(It also is part of the recipe.

Anyone know what I am talking about? I am having a few lady friends over for lunch next week and thought this would make a great summer salad with French Bread.

Checked my GH cookbook. I think this may be the recipe you are looking for. It has all the food items you mentioned.

Crab Louis
1 cup mayonnaise
3 TBS catchup
2 TBS chopped green onion
1 TBS Worcestershire
1 TBS red wine vinegar
2 tsp lemon juice
1/2 tsp salt
1/8 tsp white pepper
1 LB cooked crab
lettuce
3 hard boiled eggs-sliced
1 cucumber-sliced
1 tomato-sliced

For the dressing;
In medium bowl, combine first 8 ingredients; refrigerate for 30 minutes.

In center of platter heap crab meat. Encircle it with lettuce, egg, cucumber, and tomato slices. Pass the dressing separately.

My sincere sympathy on the loss of your cookbook. I couldn't find my favorite bread cookbook after we moved, and you would have thought I'd lost a beloved family member, according to the howling and nail-biting going on! However, I found it in a box of gardening books (I don't know why, moving is traumatic).
Anyway, have you tried finding a used copy on Alibris (alibris.com)? I hope you find/replace your book.

okay, I dug through my library of cookbooks and found both the 1963 lst printing of Joys of Jello and an anniversary book. There are several choices. One is jello,& pudding, cooked together and then when cooled you added Dream Whip, That picture looks pretty fluffy. But I used to just make jello, & add real whip cream. Thats a Bavarian. but there is also layered cheesecake, with graham crackers, cream cheese, light cream. It also helps if we know when this started because these recipes were popular at certain times. There was a product called 123 jello I think that came out fluffy because it had whipped topping or something in it. So all of those recipes came out pastel and fluffy. The carnation milk --do you know if it was condensed milk or evaporated? I'll give you the recipe as soon as you guess which it was or have more clues. Maybe there are family cookbooks, or you could remember what the cookbook looked like. the original was spiral bound with a red wineglass of jello on the cover.

Good recipes are where you find them. :) Most of my mentions below (which I won't edit out in case they're of interest to anyone) are for baking and the cooking ones are for a specific method or flavor. I realized in thinking about this, that most of my cooking is what I learned at home. Another great learning experience, however, was cooking through a bunch of recipes that I was editing, and needed to photograph, for a newsletter. Many were things I wouldn't have otherwise made, most were decent to good, if not great, and inviting people to lunch, regularly, to eat the results made for great socializing. Think Julie and Julia, without the drama. :) So I'd suggest you go through the books you have and make every recipe that has ingredients you like and see what you get. :) I don't make a lot of recipes from cookbooks, but I will use them as guides. I have dozens, and like to read through them for inspiration. When I was trying to raise my game with braises, which I love because they're inexpensive and you just throw everything in a pot, I made a few from All About Braising: The Art of Uncomplicated Cooking by Molly Stevens. The duck legs with sour cherries is worth the price of the book. :) But it's a lot of doing stuff for a braise, and I haven't made it again. Recently, I was given Plenty by Yoram Ottolenghi and it's fabulous, but I haven't made anything from it yet. I also use recipes from the 'net. I like finding ones that have a lot of comments. That's better than lab testing! I have many baking specific cookbooks and couldn't find a good recipe for plain chocolate cake. I wanted it to make cake with an 8-year-old, so I wanted a plain old cake, and not a mix. I could have invented a chocolate pound cake, but I finally found this on Add A Pinch blog. It really is that good, and we made it (twice) without the secret ingredient (espresso powder), and it was still that good (I used Valrhona cocoa). The best bundt cake recipe I ever made was also from a blog, which is gone now. It had a perfect crumb and was truly delicious. My most popular cake is a pumpkin chocolate marble bundt from Sunset magazine. The linked fig pie is also a big hit. The Black Family Reunion Cookbook from the NCNW (which is a from the store, bound volume) is another favorite, with all kinds of different recipes for cornpone and corn muffins, my favorite Passover green vegetable kugel is from a local congregation cookbook, and the "family" matzah ball recipe originated with one put out by the local Hadassah. When I make bread pudding, I refer to the recipe in It's All American Food by David Rosengarten, but I don't make precisely that. I do make the arroz con pollo as directed (more or less--it's my mother's recipe (her book, that is) and I think there are some changes she's made over the years) from The Spice Cookbook by Stuckey, Day and Spier from the 1960's. What I'm trying to say is having a favorite recipe from whatever source, is normal. Don't think of it as underutilizing your cookbooks. Think of it as cherishing the best they have to offer. :)

TEQUILA-GLAZED CHICKEN WITH JALAPENO 1 1/2 tablespoons whole coriander seeds, coarsely ground in spice mill or mortar with pestle 1 3/4 teaspoons coarse kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper 1 (3 1/2- to 4-pound) cut-up (best of fryer) chicken 1/3 cup orange juice or pineapple juice 1/4 cup gold or silver tequila 2 tablespoons (packed) golden brown sugar 2 tablespoons honey 1 to 2 red jalapeÃ±o chiles with seeds, finely chopped 1 shallot, minced Nonstick vegetable oil spray Mix coriander, salt, and red pepper. Sprinkle mixture all over chicken. Arrange chicken, skin side up, on baking sheet; cover and chill at least 6 hours or overnight. Sylviatexas, yes, I have eaten mock apple pie that a friend's mother made for an after school treat when I went home with her after school one day about 1955. I had never had it, and if I had not been told, I would have thought it was a slice of apple pie. The Ritz crackers are halved, and the only thing that gives it away is that the edges of the "apples" are scalloped or look like they have been peeled with pinking shears. That was an interesting visit. When my friend introduced me to her mother, her mom gasped and asked if I was Jack ____'s daughter. I replied that I was, and she proceeded to tell me how he was so handsome and she had had a crush on him in their single days. At dinner that night I related this mom's report of my dad. He was tickled to hear that a girl he did not remember from his past remembered him. I have seen pictures of my dad from back then, and he looked like a slender Bert Lancaster.

I was just on Alibris looking for a book, and checked out the GH cookbooks while I was on the site. There are a bunch! Since I don't know which of the GH books you want, I suggest that you get on the site and see if the "lost" book is available. The prices are reasonable, VERY reasonable! Good luck!

Thanks, I still also have boxes unpacked and will continue to look. But YES!!!! That is the recipe. Is the garden web just THE BEST. How did we ever live before without this site. I practically built my new house, picked out my kitchen, appliances, etc. and now decorating from it. Love you GARDEN WEB!!!! (maybe I need a life.)

Glad it was the recipe you were looking for Sanborn! I use my GH cookbook frequently. It is one of the best cookbooks I think. I received it as a Wedding gift when we were married in 1981. Good basic recipes that you can personalize to your own tastes. Hope your book is in one of those boxes! NancyLouise

So funny, I received mine from my mother when I got engaged and I was married in 1972, (she told me I had better learn to cook if I wanted to keep a husband!!!!!!!!!

I didn't know which one you wanted so I scanned them all:

REMARKABLE FUDGE

Butter sides of heavy 3-quart saucepan.

Add 4 cups granulated sugar, one 14-1/2-ounce can (1-2/3 cups), evaporated milk, and 1 cup butter. Cook over medium heat to soft ball stage (236ÃÂº); stirring frequently. Remove from heat; add one 12-ounce package (2 cups) semisweet chocolate pieces, 1 pint marshmallow creme, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and 1 cup broken walnuts. Beat till chocolate melts, Pour into buttered 13x9x2-inch pan. Score while warm, cut when cool and firm.

BLUE RIBBON FUDGE

Butter sides of heavy 2-quart saucepan.

In it combine 2 cups granulated sugar, one 6-ounce can evaporated milk, two l-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate, dash salt, and 1 teaspoon light corn syrup. Cook and stir over medium heat till chocolate melts and sugar dissolves. Cook to soft ball stage (236ÃÂº), Immediately remove from heat, Add 2 tablespoons butter without stirring. Cool to lukewarm (110ÃÂº). Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and beat vigorously till fudge stiffens and loses its gloss. Quickly stir in 1/2 cup chopped walnuts, Push from pan, (don't scrape sides) into buttered shallow pan. Score while warm; cut when firm.

OPERA FUDGE

Butter sides of a heavy 2-quart saucepan.

In it combine 2 cups granulated sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 1/2 cup light cream, 1 tablespoon light corn syrup, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, till sugar dissolves and mixture boils, Cook to soft ball stage (238ÃÂº). Immediately remove from heat; cool to lukewarm ,(110ÃÂº) without stirring. Add 1 tablespoon butter and 1 teaspoon vanilla, Beat vigorously till fudge stiffens and loses its gloss. Quickly stir in 1/4 cup chopped candied cherries, Spread in buttered 9x5x3-inch pan. Score while warm; cut when firm.
