countertops: Quartz vs. Granite? Lighter color granites?
Comments (23)andreammd - I'm afraid I can't help much with stone yards in BC, I'm in Ottawa and I had to go to Montreal to get the quartzite. That said, I'm sure Vancouver must have a couple of great stone yards with a good enough selection to stock quartzite. I doubt you would find it anywhere other than in the lower mainland generally, but who knows? The quartzite goes by a few names, I've seen Luce di luna from most of the US posters, at Ciot (the stone yard I visited in both Mtl and Toronto) it is called Quartzite Bianca. There are other white/grey quartzites out there that seem to hit that combination of a marble feel without the granite look and yet more movement than quartz, so definitely call a few yards and ask to see everything they've got. I have also seen here on Gardenweb a few white/grey granites that I actually like - it would probably be worth looking at all of the white/grey quartzites and granites in case you see a granite you like as well. I saw lots of the more common white/grey granite slabs at Ciot, but nothing that really did it for me. Good luck!...See MoreAnyone else use Granite Transformations?
Comments (13)I'm glad that you're happy with your new tops. I'm interested to hear how you like them in the long run. As a KD, I looked in to the product when it was first available in my area. And because of the high cost, I decided not to look in to it further. Solid 3cm granite (quartz and acrylic as well)installations is usually done in a day too. I use a granite fabricator that will do: -tearout old tops (not much demo to it) -set new tops and optional splashes -hookup plumbing (if granite or quartz, should be done next day) They would be done in 3-6 hours depending on the job. The only thing they don't do is electrical hookups (ie slide in range) In those cases, I hire a carpenter or electrician to go out and do that. Did you have the impression that granite took more than a day to install? I'm sorry, but I just don't see the benefit of this company for most people. If it was 1/3 of the cost of granite....maybe. My entry level granite is about $58 sq ft. installed, but you have to pay extra for the optional tearout and plumbing hookups. Tearouts average around $150-$200. Plumbing hookups range from $100-$262. But if you're thrilled with your tops and service, that's what's important....See Morewhat are people using today granite or quartz countertops
Comments (10)I am a fabricator with experience in thousands of jobs in granite, quartz, marble, soapstone, travertine, schist, and others. the "countertop comparison" is inaccurate. Granite or any other natural stone never fades. quartz countertops, in practice, are not "harder than granite". While quartz is the hardest component in granite quartz countertops are an amalgam of quartz chips, other inclusions, coloring agents, and resin. In practice most natural stones used for countertops are more scratch resistant than quartz tops. The consumer cares about scratch resistance. Additionally, the comparison rates quartz countetops as "heat resistant" when the biggest negative of quartz countertops material is their susceptibility to heat damage. EVERY manufacturer of quartz tops specifically excludes heat damage from their warranty. The consumer cares about susceptibility to damage, not some esoteric engineering material property. Finally, the comparison notes that granite requires resealing "regularly". Many stones requires no sealing at all. Most granite countertops materials need, at most, sealing once a year. The process is also no more work than a good cleaning....See MoreAnyone Use Granite Transformations?
Comments (31)I have shopped Houzz for a few years now. I only wish I would have seen this thread sooner! I just had GT of Chico Ca install kitchen counters. WHAT A NIGHTMARE! First time they were to big. They didn't follow what I had specified. The second attempt they were to small and didn't fit. Third time they were installed but the work was so sloppy! Unlevel counters, epoxy oozing around the sink. The list goes on... I have photos of all of it and the company offered me a lousy $200 to cover the cost of touching up my badly scratched cabinets. I hate my kitchen now. It does look cheap as others have stated. What a huge and very costly mistake....See Morejgs7691
