Need advice on Cottage / Shabby Chic Girl's Room
Comments (14)Gwen, you're welcome and I'm so glad you enjoyed the pictures I posted. I think those rooms are dreamy. One of the things I love about the more "modern" decorating is the two-toned curtains. Also, when doing shabby chic or cottage, there is a lot of mixing of fabrics. Since you sew, I'm wondering if you can buy the too-short curtains, cut a little off the bottom or top, lengthen the curtains, and use the cut off fabric in bed pillows or chair cushions along with whatever fabric you use to lengthen the curtains? I'm not sure if that woule work or not but it's something to think about. That said, white is always used a lot in cottage decor and shabby chic. Lovely white window treatments are easy to find. One of the prettiest I ever saw I think was carried by Pottery Barn and they were a thin semi-opaque cotton, maybe a batiste. Along the top they were smocked. They were just yummy. I have Orange Peel walls too and I wouldn't hesitate to try out the stamping. Just grab any paint you have around and stamp something on there pushing hard and see what you get. You can have a damp sponge in your other hand ready to scrub off whatever you did. Another thing about the shabby chic look is that it's rather chippy and broken looking, so if your stamp didn't do a perfect print it might add to the charm rather than subtracting from it. I'd give it a try if the idea appeals to you....See MoreShabby chic without the paint?
Comments (12)Jamies, if you post pics you can get some specific advice for your style home. Don't be afraid. It's not impossible to pull of Shabby Chic in a newer home when you understand the basic principals behind it. Shabby Chic is about personalizing the space. You can get ideas here and then run with them putting your own twist on it. The main thing that will propel you decision is the style of the house itself. If it is very Modern and you own some pieces that are too rustic, you may have to mix some metal pieces in so the furnishings do not have a disconnect to the house. It won't be pure Shabby Chic but may be a look you are happy with. And don't forget Fabric. Shabby Chic uses lots of fabric. The dining room above could be made more Shabby Chic by showing it with and abundance of fabric curtains on the windows and maybe even a Chantilly lace tablecloth. Yeah crazy, I know. It's a look people where will either love it or hate it. Memorable. Not boring. People will talk. You may be able to dress up your rustic cabinet with fabric inserts in the doors or something to soften the rustic look. When you look at a rustic piece being considered for your Shabby Chic look you may have to think about softening it with fabric or a sheer wash of paint to make it fit in your scheme. OR transform a formal piece into something more gritty, like replacing the velvet on dining room chairs with grainsack or sailcloth. If your home is Modern and you do not want painted furniture consider using some vintage Danish Modern pieces in natural wood for a Shabby Chic look: Danish Modern in natural wood with elements of Shabby Chic like the white linen curtains. Picture this with vintage floral china instead of the modern china used in this photo....See MoreCurtains for DD's Shabby Chic Bedroom
Comments (27)Your welcome Judy. I have 2 tiny ballet dancers, 4 & 6, part of the reason I bought the tulle. I had such a problem finding WT's for that room. The windows in the room are caddy cornered, and part of the problem is one of the window's is boarded up from the outside. Our home is a work in progress. It has been a slow renovation/restoration, 3 years in the making. We found the windows in their room behind knotty pine paneling. Their bedroom is not finished, I still intend on hanging their tutu's on the wall. The tulle was meant to be temporary, but I really like how it turned out, and since we have so many other projects going on in the house, they will probably stay indefinitely. I will post pics tomorrow. I don't have any close-ups and the girlies are asleep in there right now. BTW, I am delighted to see your DD's bedroom and the similarities in my girls' bedroom. Perhaps this may mean they will still like it when they are 15? I could only hope ;-)...See Moreneed color help for shabby chic room
Comments (18)Have you painted your DD's room yet? If not, is there any possibility you could just switch rooms so that you only have to paint one of them? We went through this EXACT scenario when we moved into our current home - we painted pink over Incredible Hulk green and neutralized a peachy/pink guest BR. I can't tell you how many times DH and I have looked back and said "what were we thinking?!" We should have just painted one room and let DD enjoy the peachy/pink. Oh well....See MoreScarlett001
