advice on used Wolf Range Top

I have been offered a "New" 36" Wolf Gourmet 6 burner rangetop. it is very hard to find out info on this model, but i i have found from Wolf is that it was the last year that they made the range before being bought by Sub Zero and it is pretty much the same as the wolf RT 366 model. The issue or potential issue is i can't get pricing on what this cost when new (about 12-14 years ago. this range top has never been used but while in storage some rodent infestation happened so when I took off the burners there was a nest and a lot of signs of infestation. I have not nor can i hook up the gas to the unit. I feel that with a good cleaning and maybe having to replace the ignition wires if they have been chewed on I can get a great open top burner range. Just not sure what a fair offer is. It is new but very old and maybe damaged. Any ideas or comments would be appreciated

Any appliance with a proven rodent infestation would AT LEAST be priced as a half-life used appliance, in my book. I'd personally not be willing to pay more than 1/4 original price, and that's ONLY if I had an opportunity to make sure parts were still available and I'd inspected the entire guts for problems. You will have to clean it from stem to stern to make sure there is no combustible material anywhere in the interior where it should not be, and that no wires or such have been damaged. There is quite a bit of risk to this "new" appliance. Not to mention the theoretical possibility of hanta virus being aerosolized upon heat-up, eventually.

I would avoid purchasing this range top for the reasons stated above me.

I'll explain my post (the 1st response to OP), but I won't get into a debate over which range is best, because feelings run high among some folks, and I respect everyone's individual preferences. For myself only (I have the 30" Wolf DF range), I never, ever Wok cook, so having instant, high heat flames is not, and never will be, important to me. I sautee all of the time, and the heat produced by my burners more than meets my sautee requirements. Likewise, while people sometimes talk about how many BTUs their ranges produce and how they can bring water to a boil in "x" minutes, that has never been important to me. The BTUs on the range I have are more than sufficient for the kind of cooking I do...which is home variety, often at a gourmet (but certainly not professional) level. I wanted a range that had wonderful low burner output and could melt chocolate without burning, could hold a sauce without scorching, etc. And the DF does that beautifully. I like the fact that 3 of the burners on the 30" range have a high BTU (I think it's 15,000 - but don't quote me), and the one in the back has only 9,000 BTUs for its high heat level. All of that works wonderfully well for the way I cook. So, bottom line, I recognize my needs may not be similar to people who are much more professional in the kitchen, who need a range with a higher level of performance. For my wants the DF range (with its wonderful convection oven, which I truly love) makes me ecstatic every time I use it, and produces fabulous meals.

Have had Wolf with Charboiler for 7 years. I assume the design hasn't changed. Don't know if the "reverberator plate" is the same as my "blank off" plate, which is a small SS plate that you put on the IR honey comb to reduce the heat. For what we grill, usually don't use it to get a full sear (and does it ever sear). But, curiousity led me to buy another plate and cut it into about a 4" and 7" plate to give different heat levels and by putting one of the shorter ones towards the back for a two stage, front sear and rear cooler finishing part. Works pretty well. As for cleaning, we used to follow manual and put damp cloth over grid to soften it up, but saw in a Wolf cooking demonstration where they just put a shallow aluminum throw away backing pan right over the grid for about a 10" burnoff after grilling, and that pretty much vaporizes residue to a white dust. Then every few times just pop out the whole liner and get it with Bar Keepers Friend and a SS scrubbie in the sink. Hope this helps . . .

First, a warning -- I have never lived in a house that needed make-up air. Not even close. Double-pane glass makes little sense for us since all the heat goes around the sashes in our Victorian. My experience with MUA is related to commercial systems. What follows is an opinion about the kinds of things that would make me consider MUA. Unless you have a Code requirement for make-up air, you have a fireplace you use when cooking (I seem to remember that you are South Bay?), have a "naturally" vented gas appliance in "connected space" (no always-closed doors between the hood and the appliance), or have a "tight" house (recent, energy-efficient construction, most likely), I would skip MUA. Even if you do need MUA, the difference in the maximum hood flow probably wouldn't significantly influence the the cost of the MUA system, which I would think was primarily labor driven. If not significantly more expensive, and you can run at least an 8" duct (preferably a 10"), I'd go with 900 CFM for two reasons: * You have it when you need it -- guests over, and the kitchen fills with smoke... * A 900 CFM blower at 600 CFM may be noticeably quieter than a 600 CFM blower at 600 CFM The 24" will serve you well. Not necessarily the same...
I was selling Sub zero/ Wolf for some time shortly after they came out. It took a few years for them to come on market after Sub bought the "rights" to residential Wolf. My understanding was that they completely redesign ed the valves and ports (and upgraded the fir, finish and warranty)

thank you!, you think $750. is fair? that leaves some wiggle room to replace wires and igniters. all 6 burners are open top and full 16,000 BTU down to 500, which I prefer over the new sealed burner top. I should be able to hook it up to propane and at least get a flame going even if it is not optimal

The nozzles for gas and propane are different. You can't just hook up a gas stove to propane. It could, however, be tremendously exciting and could make an excellent Youtube video. I'd get back 100 feet and zoom in.

The Wolf rangetop is tempting, but definitely do your homework before offering $750. Mice can do lots of damage and I would be hesitant with any type of infestation. And the smell that may be produced when it is turned on. We had mice in our pantry 3x in as many months. I washed the walls and everything in it from top to bottom - still smell the urine.

Contact a Wolf appliance repair shop for their opinion. I have found they are always willing to help.

I had a gorgeous old gas range at our log cabin years ago. It didn't cost me much to convert the jets to propane. I used it happily for a few years but we were still slowly building the cabin and somehow mice got in under the temporary back door we were using. They nested in the stove and when we went out for Thanksgiving and I fired up the oven to make my pumpkin pies, I literally cried. The smell was putrid. DH tore all the panelling off and discarded all the insulation and cleaned it as best he could. But we could never totally get rid of the smell when the oven was hot and knowing what had been in there, I finally got rid of it.
