Are refrigerators with in-door ice/water dispensers worth buying?
Comments (19)10 years ago, I really wanted the water/ice dispenser so we got it. I will never get another one. What a big mistake. There was alays ice dropped on the hardwood floor. It was hard for me to get the ice without having some drop on the floor. With 2 kids, these are type of things that are hard to "teach" well enough to avoid the problem every single time. It actually died once and had it repaired. Then it died again with the flap in the open position. We disconnected dispenser and closed the flap so the air would not get into the freezer all the time. I think a problem with these is that everytime you use it, it lets in room air into the freezer compartment. This causes a large amount of humidity (it has to do with the relative humidity difference between room temperature and freezer compartment) and the water freezes out and causes freezer burn to the food. It's like briefly opening and closing the freezer door everytime you use the ice dispenser. Many people like them very much but not for me....See MoreAre counter-depth refrigerators worth it?
Comments (8)Last fall I shopped for counter depth refrigerators and was so disappointed that I didn't buy one. I didn't want a side by side, and was told that all the mainstream bottom mounts, except for a new GE were made by the same manufacturer. Molding, hardware, and outer appearance are what differs. The crisper drawers are useless. They can hold one head of leaf lettuce and little more. The ubiquitous shallow drawer (is it supposed to be a meat drawer?) is of no use to me. I also disliked the abundance of white molded plastic inside. I grocery shop every 5-6 days and buy mainly produce. There is simply not enough room inside. There are just two of us using an old counter depth side by side Amana. I am prepared to pay twice the price of KA, JA, etc., but haven't found the ideal product. I was disappointed that the new 36" Liebherr is a FD with two freezer drawers, but I'll revisit the 30" (I think it's about a thousand more than the others) and check out the pricier new model. I love the simplicity of that 30"; super tall, though....See MoreAre built in fridges worth it?
Comments (13)I decided to go with the JA FD CD panel-ready and make it look as built in as I could. I ordered a 25 1/2 deep refrigerator cabinet instead of the usual 24" deep cabinet to hide every last scrap of metal on the sides of the fridge (and a fair bit of gasket) and had the front paneled. It doesn't look as integrated as say, a 700 series sub zero, but it comes close to some of the other free standing sub zeros that aren't integrated, IMO. People who aren't TKO actually have come into my kitchen and assumed it's a SZ. Couldn't fool anyone on this board tho'! With regard to "worth it," I was never sold on the dual compressor thing, which is what sub zero says makes food last forever in the fridge and didn't consider spending a couple thousand dollars extra just to make my lettuce last a couple days longer. I put the money into my stove, which is an appliance that I think makes more of a difference to the cook (ie ME) than the fridge which is basically just an ice box. I like the decision we made. I also like the JA FD CD alot though my husband detests the placement of the water dispenser and the ice maker. I can see his point about the dispenser but it doesn't bother me one bit. Also, we have an extra fridge in the garage and a big freezer in the cellar, and I think that's important because when I do a 'big cook day' I stash supplied all over the place and the JA FD CD couldn't handle all that. We're a family of 4 -- two parents, two pre-teens. The fridge garage is also a good place to try to 'hide' the cakes and cheeses and other yummy things that, if I were to see them every time I opened my day-to-day fridge, I'd eat....See MoreLiebherr Refrigerator worth the cost?
Comments (11)We are also a family of 2-senior citizens. When DH cooks it's almost always with fresh food. Up to now, we've always had Sears Kenmore refrigerators-never any problems and when we got rid of them, they were still working, even after 15+ years. Hoping the Samsung will be as reliable. Choice was Kenmore Elite or the Samsung. The only ones we found that were flush or less with our counters were the Sub Zero and the Liebherr but they are pricey if you want 36". The Sub Zero we were considering was B130U-F-R which was under 20 cu. ft. for $6997 without the sides and front (extra even for just stainless) but dimensions were 30" wide by 24" deep by 84" high. 36" wide would probably cost more. Believe Liebherr's dimensions for depth and height would be similar. The Samsung counter depth we got will be 36" wide and about 29" deep with the handles but a lot less money. DH does 90% of the cooking so he got to choose the appliances and even though he liked the pricey ones he went with the Samsung....See MoreGreenDesigns
