As I've posted before we didn't buy new appliances because the refrigerator and microwave are fairly new. We spray painted the range to be all black instead of black & white and we're using the old dishwasher with rust starting on some of the racks. A friend is giving us a really nice Maytag DW (about 1y/o) but now that we're getting this extra check from Uncle Sam I'm thinking about splurging on a new DW.

Anyone else?

Just in case anybody is interested, I read an article yesterday that Sears and Kmart will give you an extra 10% in you take your check in and trade it for gift cards. That's pretty good if you're considering new appliances.

It's changed our plans, a bit. We were going to purchase an interim house, bank-owned, live there while we built and hire a contractor for our house. Then sell the interim house. Now we'll rent, because we're value investors and the stock P/E ratios are too good to resist. We'd rather have our money invested in that deliciously undervalued stock market than in real estate right now. To make up the cost of renting and private finance for our build we'll self-build and take an extra year. We had a hard discussion about whether we should even build...the money might be better invested. The land we bought is rare, we got an amazing bargain when we bought it and it would sell for an enormous price. We were tempted to sell and buy a pre-built bargain house, sooo tempted. The pork in the Fed bailout decided us. Our national leaders have no concept of fiscal responsibility. We're positioning for double-digit inflation, and we might as well build because we sure don't want to be holding diluted cash. It does make a difference in our decision that we're younger, mid-40's. We're still earning, and don't plan to retire ever, at all, because our work is fun. If we were retired we'd be looking for a great deal on an already-built house. Our decision to build arises from wanting to work at home in our pyjamas. Regular house builds don't have enough office space. So, every household budget is different. What (hopefully) will work for us may not work for you. So far, our stock investments are doing well even in this crazy market and we found a fantastic bargain for a rental. We've made decisions in the past that seemed illogical and they've always worked out. Trust in God and tie up your camel.

As far as I can tell, the vast majority of "robber sues homeowner and wins" stories seem to be urban myths. I did study one case in law school where a homeowner was successfully sued, but in that case, he had set up a gun on some sort of automatic trigger connected to the front door of an unoccupied cabin. The court said that this was going too far, taking the chance of killing someone to protect property, rather than life. The basic rule on self-defense is that you have to try to run away rather than use force, if you can do it safely. That basic rule does *not* hold true in your own home. There is no "duty to retreat" in your own home. The other basic rule on self-defense is that you can use only enough force to repel the attack. However, what amount of force is reasonable depends on your duty to retreat. Since you have no duty to retreat inside your home, you can use more force than you would outside your home. As to whether you can use wasp spray as a weapon, I don't know the answer. My best guess would be that if you used it during an attack on the street, the courts would treat it as any other dangerous weapon. If you used it in your home (or car, at least in some states), even if you planned to use it as a weapon, I doubt there would be an issue. The law varies by state. If you want to see what your state thinks about these matters, look up the "castle doctrine," as in "my home is my castle." As a practical matter, I think most people are okay using whatever force they need to protect themselves inside their own homes. And that's even more so for women. Where I could see it getting dicey is if some teenaged kid broke into a house for drug money, having no weapon and thinking the house was unoccupied, tried to run away when he saw someone was home, and the man of the house grabbed him and beat the living s*^t out of the kid. Even then, I'll bet most police officers would tell the kid that he shouldn't have been in the house in the first place. As to whether the man of the house could then be sued, well, of course he could. Some of the castle laws protect people from being sued in these situations, but for the most part, anyone can sue anyone. Can't necessarily win, but can start the suit.

I don't like tiny knobs on big doors...so that bothers me, but the real issue is...if you have one knob it should be lower on the upper doors and higher on the lower doors (did that make sense? heh heh) But frankly, a 3" or more pull would look better, and I'd bet you could use the existing hole on many of those doors and drill one below it for the other hole. You can play with looks in advance and see what works. The green or yellow would look nice with both white and almond :) The green especially would help the almond blend easily. Now that I know they're not white...I'd be careful about painting in white. You'll immediately make the appliances look very bad by painting white on the cabinets surrounding them. Really...it would be a big mistake. For that fridge, you could take a sledge hammer to the back wall and poke that fridge back into the framing area by taking out a few 2x4's (if it's not a support wall). You can build a header around the space and push the fridge back, then maybe some trim and you'll be amazed how much better it looks. The cabinets I just removed from our remodel are the cabinets you have by the way. (VERY CLOSE anyhoo). The previous owner had changed to a corian type countertop and that did help with the look somewhat (but they were still orange oak LOL) and they didn't have any trouble holding up that counter :) I wouldn't put 3cm granite on them (because spending that type of money on counter tops when you need to do other things is silly) but I'd look to some of the prefab granite out there. We're getting a gold colored granite out of asia at $44 sq ft, with finished edges and a 4" backsplash, all installed, $44 sq ft for our new place (rental). I'll be putting that on top of some 1977 cabinets :) and they'll be just fine :)

VERY OT for Florantha & Bmorepanic Florantha, I knew zip about Tomtes....never even heard the word. Thank you so much for that very interesting link! My Great Grandma would tell us about her favorite Gremlin....they were best pals. If we left a little candy in the package before we went to bed, the darn candy was gone in the morning! Darn Favorite Gremlin went around our beds specifically looking for left\-over candy...ate it. Favorite Gremlin also did other strange things: Put Christmas tree up after we all went to bed, made cookies with our names on them for our birthdays, etc. But if we were bad to Great\-Grandma, look out! Favorite Gremlin didn't like us going against her and would find a way to get us back. LOL Again, really enjoyed reading link! Bmorepanic, I've seen you mention bondo before. I bought what I thought was Bondo.....it was in a tube, rolled. To activiate it you cut a piece off and kneaded it with your fingers. After prepping the area well, I thinly applied it to the very deep gouge left in our fridge by the pro restorers after the water damage in our kitchen. So the Bondo got put on, thinly and I thought all was going to work out perfectly as once I sanded it I would cover it with the matching appliance paint. Not so. That stuff can not be sanded! I got so tired (arms ached & hand cramped up) the first day trying to sand the bondo to a somewhat smooth finish that I gave up. Tried a couple hours the next day, gave up. Now I just leave all the sanding discs/blocks on the corner of the counter and if I walk by with nothing else to do, I'll give the area some sanding....not that it's doing any good. What's the best way/what tool? to sand this stuff once it's sets? I've got lumps and bumps on the door of a fridge where a gouge used to be. At this point, I'd rather have the gouge!

I haven't "mentally" spent our check yet. I'm one of those that will believe it when I see it. However if we do, yes, I'll spend it since we have no debt other than a mortgage that will be paid off in two years. (And if not in my kitchen it will be something in the house like flooring).

i could certainly use the money towards our current remodel, but we're donating our "economic stimulus check" to veteran's charities because we're simply outraged at the way the current administration is pulling the rug right out from under our veterans while at the very same time creating so many disabled ones who will need to access services.

sorry, don't mean to turn this into a political discussion, but arrrgh!

We're very fortunate to be in a situation where we aren't getting one. However, if we were, edlakin's approach is the one we'd take.

We are in the midst of a build. While I did consider putting it toward some upgrades, I decided it to put it in my IRA instead.

I hadn't thought of a charity. That is a great idea! I am sure most of them are struggling with these economic times.

Edlakin - You are so right. No politics here! I work at a state Veterans medical facility. These guys/gals are amazing and they deserve all the care we can give them. Your idea is wonderful.

edlakin..we're not getting a refund (if we do...based on some scale..it's very little)...and I have said that if I were going to get a refund...it would go to charity...after reading your post...it doesn't matter if we get a refund...I'm going to donate to the Veterans medical facility also. Thank you for bringing it to my attention (I've read about the facility in Texas and it is amazing...I just didn't even think of donating to it...I guess I was just oblivious...(I do donate to other organizations..I just didn't think of this one)....so again....thank you...(this is also not a political statement).

We're not eligible either, but we would do the same thing we did with the last "economic boost/rebate" check, put it into a savings account like a 529... our children will be paying for this for decades to come! Sorry to be a party pooper with the politics :)

I've spent a ton of cash (about $40 thou) in the last year. I'm taking my rebate check to Europe at the end of May and seeing how far I can make it go. From what I hear, one dinner out might use it all.

Do you know how the Lowes coupons work? I got one but I left it in my carriage as I was shopping in Lowes and "lost" it somehow. I never got to use it. I just signed up and used what I think is a different email address, but it does require a mailing address and states only one coupon per household. I was wondering if it is even possible to get another one.

I had planned to put it in the bank with a percentage going to the Rescue Mission.

I love the VA idea. DH and I are both vets (although neither of us saw a war). DH is listed as a partially disabled vet. I must say the level of care he receives at the local VA clinic is pretty good. When we were without insurance I was able to get the dreaded "annual" exam there. We'll have to look into Veteran related charity's in the future (although the Rescue Mission sure ends up with a large number of them as well)

just put it where you think it should go. the way we arrived at veteran's charities was that we were discussing what we thought the government should be doing with that money rather than giving it away for PR value.

i urge everyone to ask themselves what they think the government should be doing with that money, and then DO THAT with it!
