Pics of our FR black painted brick fireplace (long post)
Comments (51)I looked again at the entire room, last comment I was focusing on the fireplace, as I had never seen a black fireplace before and it was so bold. I love it. You did an amazing job with the light colour flooring, the black window blind, black couch, light walls, pillows match your flooring, everything gels beautifully. You really changed the look of the room completely. It is very upscale and modern in comparison to the before pic. It is budget friendly too. Also love your kitty, lol!...See MoreBrick fireplace- to paint or not to paint.
Comments (9)I have two fireplaces that are white painted brick, they were like that before we bought the home, and the outside of my house is white painted brick so it all goes. I actually really love the look of my painted brick... I have kind of an eclectic coastal thing going on. However, I really like the color of your brick. It adds a nice texture to the room. I will also tell you that one drawback of my painted brick is that it's hard to keep the top of the hearth looking clean in my family room. Everyone sits there, food and drink gets spilled on it... it just gets looking grimy and it doesn't clean up well so I end up slapping more white paint on periodically. No one sits on the hearth in my kitchen though and that hasn't been difficult to keep clean looking. So just some food for thought depending on how your room gets used. :)...See MorePaint brick fireplace?
Comments (7)Hi Vivian! Very nice job with the built ins, they look clean and fresh. I can see how the fireplace is underwhelming in comparison. How you handle the fireplace depends on the direction you want to go with the room. Matching the built-ins would create a more textural backdrop for everything else. The finished paint coat could match as well (semi-gloss, I'm guessing?) or you could go with a gloss to give the bricks a more tile-like look. (An aside, I've never painted a fireplace, so make sure to check lots of resources on what kind of prep / primer / other steps should happen! I'm just commenting on the finished look.) Personally, I might think about a light greige to give the look of a limestone hearth. Your textures might work well with that. In that case, I'd tend toward a semi-gloss or eggshell to mimic the velvety texture of limestone. If, on the other hand, you have any reservations about painting the bricks, there's some more to consider. The high contrast you're seeing right now is in color, style, and texture. A triple whammy. To tone down the contrast, you would mix up your decorative elements. Place crisp, light accessories at the fireplace - maybe a set of BIG vases or jugs in a creamy porcelain on the hearth to pop against the brick texture. Maybe a cream painted iron piece (railing, grate, window frame) above the mantel. Then bring more rustic accessories onto your clean-lined shelves: driftwood, antiques, and shabby-chic pieces. By toning down the contrast between the fireplace and built ins, they could work better together. Hopefully some of that is useful! - Doug...See MoreTo Paint Brick Fireplace White or Not? Need Help!
Comments (24)The texture, stack, color of the brick and the shape of a fire place is designed specifically for the style and era of a home. Painting brick and stone is like trying to turn a tutor home into a MCM and usually turns out mishmashed. To each their own , but the examples above of the painted stone and brick fireplace look cheap , flat and tacky. I've seen several posts on how to bring back the character and warmth in the snowstorm kitchens that was all the fad. I've only seen two on how to remove the paint from brick , but I'm sure there will be many more as the trend fades. Guess what, your stuck with it. You can't remove the paint....See Morerivkadr
