Getting the right color cast in glaze to blend with orangey wood
Comments (13)Unfortunately, I donâÂÂt have a sample board of the treatment, to use for testing. It would make it so much easier. I do make them now. IâÂÂm afraid I canâÂÂt imagine the warm gray glaze. I want to neutralize the pink a bit, but am having a hard time visualizing how adding gray tones would go with the warm wood colors. I thought of adding in some of the bottom color, but blue-green + pink equals some shade of purple (!) If I remember correctly, adding the complementary color would tone down the intensity. Which for pink, would be a green with a touch of yellow, right? There ARE a few touches of ochre: I added a bit a few years back when I hung some pictures with ochre toned mats. IâÂÂm concerned that if I use an overall ochre glaze, though, it will make the wall look âÂÂdirty.â IâÂÂm thinking now of adding some by pouncing with a dry sponge and a small amount of the diluted ochre color mixed with water. I could build it up gradually so as not to go too far all at once....See MoreColor of area carpet on top blue wall to wall carpet?
Comments (19)I don't care for area rugs of any kind. I like an uninterrupted vision on a floor. Just my preference. Plus if you have nice floors why cover them up. I did have 2 in my last house (that is were I found out I don't like them) , but they never creeped, slithered, wormed, lollygaged or crawled anywhere. They did fly though, out the front door when I found out I don't like area rugs. Find a nice pattern and enjoy. You might find out you like the W/W carpet in the basement if you live in a cold weather climate. The floor is so much warmer....See MoreUpdating A House Full of Golden Oak Trim
Comments (1)20K to paint everything in the house (kitchen cabs, vanities, all door trim, window trim and all of the baseboards)? I think the oak vanity is fine. the front door and back slider is fine The bannister is ok. All of the door trim and window trim? yes to painting. (again, if changing any of the flooring, you may just want to get new door/window trim that has a more modern look to it) As for the baseboard, if you have any plans on changing any of the flooring, then just get new baseboards. don't bother painting what's there. They're too small short) anyway since you said you wanted more of a modern look. update to a 5-6" simple baseboard molding for an updated look: Plus, we aren't talking about quality oak trim here. It's not the solid oak from the 20's. it's 80-90's crappy laminate honey oak that they put in all new homes. As for the kitchen cabinets and island. Do you like the layout? The door style is very dated (especially if you want modern) It might make more sense to have them refaced. those heavy chairs around the island? just, no. The backsplash? also a no. The window above the cabinets, yes, and yes to painting those, if you can't replace them. Don't know if they are low-e, but during the summer it might make a diff if you got new windows that reflected the heat a bit better....See MoreHarvest gold/golden oak trim
Comments (26)You may be identifying the wrong problem and solution to modernize your space. As others have said, you have a lot of very dark pieces--china cabinet, dark counter stools, dark countertops that visually darken the space. Look at the photos below that also have golden trim. They look modern because the furnishings and lighting are lighter. Some suggestions: --New wall paint. Here's a classic Houzz article on paints that harmonize with wood trim. Stark white isn't the way to go. You need something warmer. Take a look at the whites in this article and search other articles for "whites that go with golden oak." https://www.houzz.com/magazine/11-terrific-paint-color-matches-for-wood-details-stsetivw-vs~9025200 --Can you take the top off the china cabinet and turn it into a buffet? --Can you get more modern counter stools in a golden tone, not this one necessarily, but something lighter? Or paint those you have in an ivory? -- --I see your great orange enamal ware. Why not treat yourself to a modern art work on your big wall with some orange and blues in it? This palette: --I'm with the others that the curtains are just. too. much. Notice how in the above photos there's very little window "dressing." We might be wrong, but can you take down the curtains and see how that looks and feels for awhile?...See MoreRelated Professionals
