vintage farmhouse apron sink w/ backsplash, need faucet info

Our original 1920 fireclay farmhouse sink has a built on backsplash. I want to get a new, more decorative faucet so I can put the original faucet in the smaller farmhouse sink with backsplash that we purchased for our laundry/butlers pantry area.

I'm having difficulty finding a faucet that fits in our dimensions, the spout needs to be about a 6 inch reach (no more than 8 1/2 inches out from the wall. The handle needs to be no more than about 3 inches out from wall. We have the normal 8 inch spread mounting holes.

The other option is to keep the original kitchen faucet in the kitchen sink, and purchase another faucet for the utility sink. It must also be a wall mount bridge faucet with a short spout reach.

Please help me locate the necessary faucet so I can use the sink!!!

Ooh, I adore vintage sinks! Very very nice pieces you have there.

What about a double-jointed faucet that's very flexible so you can swing it exactly where you need it in the 2 basins?

A lot of vintage sink folks go for a Chicago wall-mounted faucet: can't beat the price and it's commercial quality. You can buy the handles and the spout separately, so you can mix and max to find your perfect dimensions.
This guy, for instance, seems to fit the bill for you. Chicago also makes nice double-jointed spouts to add to the handle of your choice.

I got this one for my antique sink, American standard 7295.252. It has a 5.63 reach. I got the smaller reach because the basin is rather shallow and I didn't want a lot of splashing.

I don't have a picture of it, but I have a link.

Step by Step Instruction I found this on a site to help you :) Step 1: Countertop Cut-Out. Use the sink upside down to trace the cut out of the countertop. Use precise measurements. Step 2: Cabinet Cut-Out. Cut the front of the base cabinet according to the front apron of the farm sink. Please note that the front of the sink is slightly tapered. This means that the width of the top is slightly wider than that of the bottom. You should make a template using heavy paper or carton so that your cabinet is cut at the same angle as the sink. Step 3: Supporting the Sink. Mount the undermount installation kit (WHUMSB) to the inner side walls of your cabinet. We then recommend putting plywood on the rods to create a large smooth flat surface. Drill the neccessary drain holes. If you did not purchase the kit you will need to create a custom support using 2x4's. Step 4: Leveling. Slide your sink in and make sure it is leveled on bottom and top. Make adjustments if necessary. Step 5: Sealing. Using a silicone sealer seal all edges of the sink to the countertop to prevent water from leaking into your cabinet. Enjoying. Invite all your friends and family over for dinner and show off your new gorgeous sink! * Recommend purchasing a stainless steel grid to protect your investment. Hi all! Yes, I'm another person with one of the old original drainboard sinks. I'm happy to add my limited knowledge to the discussion. For the old vintage sinks, some can accommodate a disposal, some cannot -- it depends on the size of the drain hole. Lots only have an 1 1/2" drain, so there's no way to fit a disposal. Ours has a bigger hole (I think ours is 4", I don't remember off hand) so we added a disposal to ours when we did our kitchen. The ability to put a full sized dishwasher underneath probably depends on whether the sink has a front apron or not. The older ones like mine and marylu's wouldn't take a conventional dishwasher because there is not enough height below the apron. The later drainboard sinks from the 40s and 50s do not have a front apron, so you might possibly be able to make a regular dishwasher fit. I think the dishwasher would be wider than the drainboard though, so it might look awkward. My dishwasher is to the right of my sink. If you decide to go the route of an old sink, I'd recommend that you take your time and find one in good enough original condition that you don't need to refinish it. I looked into having mine spruced up and talked to a couple of local re-glazers. They don't really recommend the surface re-glazing for kitchen sinks because of all the abuse they are put through with heavy pots and pans being knocked around...much more abuse than a bathroom sink or tub. There is one company in the midwest (I could track down info in my old project notes if you need me to) that actually sandblasts sinks down to the cast iron and bakes on a new finish. I spent some time talking about the whole process with the owner of the company and he warned me that even that new finish he uses would be thinner and not have the same thick, creamy flow of the old original finishes. My finish isn't perfect, but was passable enough that I kept what I already had. In addition to ebay and craig's list, there are tons of architectural salvage places that deal with vintage plumbing. There is no one answer to your question. The variables are: -- depth of sink front to back -- front panel and sides of sink and whether those permit bumping out (not all farm sink sides are the same nor all the front panels the same) -- way the sink will be mounted under/flush with/or above the counter --interior cabinet construction -- how the faucet operates and how it will be installed. --faucet stem thickness can be an issue or sometimes there is a flange underneath to hold the faucet in place which needs clearance below. Perhaps you are aware that sinks and faucets have specification diagrams (we call those downloads) with all this critical installation information. My suggestion is to download the diagrams for each sink under consideration and read them very carefully. The inside measurements of the sink cannot be used for this purpose -- anyone who tells says such and such is ok without consulting the diagram I wouldn't trust. The person who orders and specifies the cabinets should also be given copies of those sheets as well as all the spec sheets for appliances (you likely know this but just in case). I made a booklet of those for the designer plus 2 others -- one for the plumber and one for the contractor. No one can say they don't have the right info. Likewise, download the spec sheets for any faucet considered. Pay special attention to the thickness of the faucet stem and the way the faucet operates. F.ex. some faucets turn on by pulling sideways but alo need to swivel from front to back to go from cold to hot. There must be enough space behind the faucet to permit that. Or, since you're concerned about leaning in, perhaps it would be a good idea to look at one of the Grohe faucets that can be front mounted -- that is with the control facing in and over the sink. That can be very helpful when space is tight.

70/30 and 60/40 are almost worse than 50/50. I dunno... After only having 50/50 my whole life (all 36 years of it, lol), I'm quite impressed by my experimental* 70/30. :-D The disposal is in the smaller section (kind of a pain), but the smaller section is closer to the stove, so it's not too bad. My colander perfectly spans the small section, so when I'm draining pasta, nothing touches the bottom of the sink. Which is really nice. I hand wash very few things, but I don't fill the sink up to do it (soapy sponge and slowly running water do the trick for me). All of that said, my dreams are filled with copper single basin sinks, so that I only have one disposal and one drain to clean. :-) [*experimental -- trying it out in the tract house we just had built, because I wanted to convince the husband that there's more to life than 50/50, and the builder wanted far too much for the single basin upgrade; the ultimate goal is to do single basin in the custom house.]

I just love your kitchen sink. I have a similar but it has legs. I would love to place it on a cabinet. Did yours come that way, or did you add the cabinet later?

Talking of your cabinets, I am wondering if they are original to the house and do you know what date/period they are? I am trying to redo my 1927 kitchen with something appropriate and they look very interesting. Is there any way you could post a few more pics of them and let us know if they are original?

circuspeanut, glad you like my sinks! The original sink is one of the selling point for me about this house. DH wanted to get rid of it when updating the kitchen, and replace it with a new, undermount sink. I had to say NO to that idea every time the kitchen update project was mentioned (we are DIY, hubby VERY handy with his tools :) "blush") ! He finally got the picture that I REALLY want to keep the sink, so, after 16 years, we are proceeding with the kitchen project with sink in place! Well, he actually moved it out from the cabinets and raised it a couple inches. Love it!
Thanks for the links for the faucets. I'm really wanting something with a little more character than those, preferably some curves. I've seen some, even ordered one, but the spout reach ended up being too far.

mom2lilenj, I like that faucet. It is the one I had decided on if I can't find something with a little curve to it. Could you tell me how high the soap dish is above the faucet? Actually, the measurement from the bottom of the bridge to the top of the soap dish would be great! DH extended my windowsill a few inches, giving me a wide shelf above the sink for my pots of herbs, and I'm hoping the soap dish wouldn't interfere with that. Do you like having the soapdish attached to the kitchen sink? I'd love to see a photo of your kitchen, and another of the sink area. Care to share?

danielleak450, I love the type sink you mentioned having also! My sink is original to the house, and these are the original kitchen cabinets. However, the sink had been undermounted for about 90 years and you couldn't see the "bulk" of it until this kitchen update! We recently removed the sink (fireclay, 42inch, very heavy) with the help of a jack, and DH cut the sink base cabinet down to accomodate the front edge of the sink, exposing the apron while raising the sink to a more appropriate height for me. He also had to extend the area under the window sill and behind the sink backsplash in order to move the sink out. I love what we came up with! The wide shelf is going to be great for my herbs this summer.
buffalotina Our kitchen cabinets are origninal, except that DH had to alter the sink base to expose the sink as shown above. They were painted "wild berry" when we bought the house in the early 90's! I quickly toned them down to Ralph Lauren "country stove white" and that color has worked well for me all these years. As I mentioned above, DH is very handy, and I recently talked him into building me a butlers pantry with cabinets to match the kitchen ones. He did all the work himself, and they are a great match! We were even able to find hinges and he altered the mounting style, so they look like the originals as well! I can give you information on those if you are interested. I'll post photos of the before and after, so far. Keep in mind, I'm still looking for the perfect paint color (a tan green) and final touches.

Yes, please could you post a picture of the new hinges and how you mounted them

Also, could you post a close-up of the panel of the original doors. I want to see the profile of the flat panel inset. Also I am wondering are all the old doors, including the uppers, face mounted or are they inset?
