I need to pick out trim and moulding. My builder typically uses 4 1/4 base, 2 3/4 casing and 4 1/4 crown. I have 9 foot ceilings throughout main floor. I have a tray ceiling which runs length of great room/kitchen and another tray in MBR. The trays make those ceiling 10 foot. I have cherry cabinets. The 2 doors coming off great room to bedrooms will have a nonworking transom above (possibly stained glass). All trim will be white.

I am thinking that the 2 3/4 casing seems kind of skinny. Please make recommendations. Include pics if you can. Also, how would you recommend trimming the trays. They are straight trays. The one in MBR has 45 degree angles in corners.

Here are some photo's of mine if it helps. We also have 10' ceilings, but no trays. The great room crown is 5 5/8 and 4 5/8 in the rest of the house. The exception is the foyer which is 5 5/8 w/ a crown enhancer that is about 5".

The door and window casings are 3 1/4 and the base moldings are 5 1/4 w/shoe molding added.

I think it depends a little on what the panels on the doors look like. They could be shaker style, traditional, modern, or something else I haven't listed. They could be very rustic/cabiny! The style of the panels would guide my decision. If they're shaker style, I would look for some shaker trim designs. If they are traditional, with several grooves in the panels, I would consider something more elaborate. I hope that helps!

That’s what I figured. I know they’re trying to use the trim to cover up their mistake of not removing the carpet that was previously there earlier. I’m going to have them remove it and texture the wall approximately so there’s nothing running across the air vent. I did play around with that idea, but our intention is to keep it as open as possible and get new railing. I appreciate the feedback!

What trim/ molding should be used?

You are right that new trim is all wrong I think start with that open space that is not finished and once oyu get that the way you like that will drive the rest of the trim

don't even need a space between... fill the whole space with trim and put the switch IN the trim..
