Ladybug Tablerunner

I just had to share this and tell you about the reason I made it. Quilts are so personal and I always want to know what they are for, who they are for and what made the quilter decide on that pattern.

After mailing off a couple ladybug blocks for the June lottery I decided that pattern would be perfect for a birthday present I was thinking about making. A friend is celebrating a birthday later this month and her sister is arranging a surprise party. Although I can't be there, I wanted to send something that touched on our long history. We worked together for many years and became good friends. She taught me to make jewelry (still a passion of mine) and I taught her to quilt. She is a skilled seamstress and makes draperies and other home decor professionally. We live several states apart now and don't communicate as often as we should, as happens too often with friends. But as soon as I heard that her sister was throwing the party I knew I had to do something fun for her. This little table runner quilt is embellished with a few beads to remind her of our beading times and incorporates the ladybugs she always loved. I wish I could make the trip to give it to her in person!

Kate

This tablerunner was so fun and easy to make! I started it Friday evening after work and finished it this morning (Sunday).

Oh, Kate, what a great friend you are! I'm sure she will catch all the significance of this wonderful gift. Make sure ask someone to take a picture of her with it for you.

That is kee-yute! What is the bug in the center? A moth, perhaps? I didn't notice it at first.

Good question! I wanted to do a dragonfly but couldn't figure out how to do that and keep the basic 9-patch, so I ended up with what I think of as a butterfly. But the antennae look more like a moth's, don't they?. When I showed it to a co-worker today they thought it was a ladybug with it's wings open! I think I'll keep calling it a butterfly but as long as people recognize it as a "bug" I'll be happy with it! LOL

    She will absolutely love it!

BTW -- I don't remember where I got it, but I have some of that orange striped fabric. It's some of my favorite when I want something cheerful.

Wonderful runner! I have fallen in love with this block myself and think a smaller project like this may be my best bet for getting something made. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all for responding. I don't belong to a guild and only have one other quilter in my circle of friends, including work buddies. I take every completed project to work and make them look at it but it's just not as much fun as showing it to quilters! LOL I'm sure you understand. Thanks! :~))

What a thoughtful gift! She'll probably become teary-eyed when she opens it. I know I would, because it has special meaning. I also like to know the stories and specialness behind the quilting. TFS.

I thought I responded to this earlier but I guess I didn't. I love it and I'm glad that you used a lotto block idea for it. I like this block very much and think it would make a cute little persons quilt.

Vicky - I was thinking it would be a fun child's quilt too. You could use different textures for the bugs, like minky, felt, vinyl, etc. You just never know how many ideas you might touch off when you choose a lotto block, do you?
