Getting hardwood floor with dog..OMG
Comments (12)I have a 70 lb German Shepherd and have both site finished and prefinished red oak floors in my house. The site finished floor is in my living and dining rooms. It is original to my 1930's house and I had it refinished a few years ago. The floor was left the natural color (no stain) and I had a satin finish applied. Yes there are some nail marks, but you have to look for them. My family room floor was done in 2001 with pre-finished red oak which is stained red oak and has a shiny finish. Its held up well even with the constant pounding it takes from my dog and from foster dogs, but you can see the nail marks easier than with the satin finished floor....See Morehardwood floors-with a sweet dog
Comments (21)We also have a dog, but ours was a new construction home that we were not moved into yet. As a result of the construction and sanding process we had a great deal of dust however. We vacuumed first with a shop vac, then followed up with our household vacuum prior to the first coat. Like Verti, we also vacuumed before the 2nd and 3rd coats. We wouldn't have had to do this, but we left our windows open (in August) to increase air changes and speed the drying time and as a result had little bits of dust and small insects that made it inside and landed on the floors. I would also recommend trying to find someplace to stay while finishing the floors. You also need a place to put all of your funiture while the floor dries and cures. If you are finishing one room at a time, it might be doable to just move/stack furniture and have the room closed off so that pets do not accidently wander in. The smell is not good and would bother anyone who is sensitive to paint odors and such. I am currently using Waterlox to varnish all of our door, window and baseboard trim for the house. I am applying it in our basement, but with the furnace running, you do notice it in other parts of the house as well. 5 year old DD has not "complained" about it, but does remark that mommy has been "Waterloxing" when she comes in the door....See MoreEngineered hardwood vs. Evoke VCC... for kids and dog
Comments (30)Hi @mpbiersack. We are still extremely happy with the flooring. No issues except my husband says there's one board in the kitchen that doesn't seat well. Not sure if it's from a defect or poor installation. It does scratch easily so all our furniture feet have felt or some other protection. Take care when moving heavy furniture. I can't speak to moisture because we're up on a raised foundation and live in a low humidity, high desert area. We used this flooring throughout our 2300 sqft house except in two guest rooms and media room. Still in love with the color....See MoreISO 5-Inch Super Dark Ebony Stained Hardwood Floor Pics!!
Comments (7)Dark floors SHOW dirt (dust is 90% human skin and skin sluffs off a dirty gray = dust). It shows foot prints (sock prints). It shows these twice per day (morning and evening sunlight...the angle of the light dictates the VISIBILITY of the dirt/grime/haze). Dark floors are STUNNING. They are DRAMATIC. They are DIVAS. Just like a Diva (think Madonna or Mariah Carey) they take EFFORT. Daily sweeping is a must (for those people who HATE the look of dust it could be twice daily). Swiffering (slightly damp mopping) is going to happen multiple times per day (again for those people who cannot STAND the sight of imperfections). As Hallett points out, everyone does it once - and then never again. If you MUST HAVE dramatic floors, work with a mid-tone floor. It will give you ALL the drama you want with HALF the cleaning. Ask yourself how many times per DAY are you willing to pull out the broom/damp mop. If your answer is 1/week, then you will want to work with natural coloured floors. If you feel you LOVE the feel of a broom/swiffer/mop in your hand and think it is a hoot to push it around all day, then go for the darkest floor you want. Honestly, Diva's should come with their own live-in crew....See MoreRelated Professionals
