marble counter cutouts- what do you do with the extras?

My fabricator is coming out Monday and asked me if i wanted the cutouts from my sinks and cooktop. In all I will have 5 pieces and YEAH I want them but...

what does everybody do with these pieces? My tops are honed carrara (thanks to everyone's pics here!) Any ideas on what to do with the extra pieces?

off the top of my head I'm thinking:
cutting board
cheese board (maybe an interesting shape)
convert to lazy susan

I had mine cut into a pastry board. Could also do a a cheese board. Google wms sonoma to get normal dimensions.

I also used a piece to top a desk of mine ( i didnt need much marble , it was mainly for an island)

Mine was so pricey I joked I would make coasters and chopstick rests before I threw it out!

Keep in mind though every edge is a fabrication charge.

I also have honed Carrara marble on my island and love it. Everyone literally says wow when they walk into my kitchen. It's been installed for a few months, but have only been using it for the last month. I will admit that I have been babying it a bit, because I've been a little nervous about it staining. However, we have had some spills, drips, etc. and all have wiped right up and some have even been wiped later and it still is clean/stain-free. I don't think I have any obvious etching yet. Perhaps a small scratch or too, but I actually think that was done during the fabrication. I really do love it and I'm sure it won't "babied" as much as time goes on. It was sealed before and after installation. And I also clean it with just warm water and sometimes a little dish soap. Here is a picture before we moved in.

Straying a bit OT (though I'm obviously interested in the thread as we have 70 sf of Calcatta Gold countertop scheduled for installation next week), but re the issue of butcher block finishes: I have a strong preference. The standard advice is to use "food safe oil"--mineral plus bee's wax is a favorite. We started with that on our BB counters at the lake house. After repeated coats, a two second encounter with a cut strawberry or a drop of red wine would still stain enough to require resanding. This drove me crazy. We had two smaller pieces of BB flanking the range. Becauase of the spattering issue, our installer had suggested using polyurethane. This would preclude any cutting on them, as urethane forms a protective film on the surface, and thus any cut compromises the protection. It's functional but I hate the way it looks, plasticky and way too shiny. At any rate I decided I needed something better for the island. I did oodles of online research. Had considered Watco BB oil and General Finishes Salad Bowl oil but then in a flash of inspiration realized I still had lots of Waterlox left over from doing our floors. I love our Waterlox'd floors! They are bulletproof, but using the satin finish, there is absolutely no sheen and you can see and feel the surface of the wood, unlike urethane. It's easy to apply and can be reapplied without resanding. It is tough as nails--this is a lake house with kids dripping from the lake running in and out all day. I checked and their website confirmed that it's safe for countertops (it is, for the technically interested, a polymerized tung oil product. Tung oil has been used for centuries to waterproof boats etc, but unlike pure tung oil, Waterlox dries quickly and without a sticky residue). I've put three coats on so far, Water beads immediately and there has been absolutely no staining. This is one of my true favorite products and you owe it to yourself to check it out: Waterlox HTH!

Do you have polished calacutta marble countertop?

I am going for calacatta gold (honed) in my new kitchen. I got samples of honed and polished and inflicted lots of "damage" on them. I tested each with lemon juice, olive oil, red wine, & blue gatorade (lots of pre-teen boys here). Interestingly, the honed held up much better than the polished. I left each stain on for 15 minutes, 3.5 hours, & overnight. The etching was definitely greater with the polished and, surprisingly, on these samples, the staining was worse on the polished as well. The red wine was especially bad. On the polished it seemed to seep into a larger area and discolor the stone more, whereas on the honed it was a more contained and lighter stain. As an old house person, the stain wouldn't bother me - it just adds patina. But, if you are someone who wants things to always look new, it could be a problem. Either way, on my samples, the honed help up better to staining than the polished. I suggest you definitely do some testing of your own and replicate the staining possibilities of your particular household. For example, would there possibly be red wine rings on the counter overnight? In my house, a definite possibility. Will there be red gatorade spills? Again, a yes for me. Sooooo, that's a long way of saying test it!

Hi lbrody.. I don't have a marble countertop, but I do have a marble backsplash..I sealed it with 511 sealer from Home Depot, as was suggested by my fabricator and my backksplash installer. Same product I used on my granite. Just wiped it on and then wiped off the excess. I was told once a year would be sufficient. KA:)

I had a customer who used a sink scrap as a cutting board/cheese board. It was $200 in fabrication charges and she only used it once because of the heavy weight. Think dragging out a 60 lb. block of stone every time you want to have a pretty cheese service! Most people who keep the scraps don't end up doing anything with them.

Just make sure they cut it down in size if it is large. I can't even lift my sink cutout.

There was another recent thread about this; I think the poster had granite (or could have been soapstone). There were lots of other ideas as well, including using them outside for tables, stepping stones, etc.

I put mine on a pedestal and made a small table of it. Since it is so heavy, i make sure it sits in a corner for additional support, and less chance of knocking over.

A good friend had her husband make a large serving board out out of her Silestone cooktop cutout. Her cooktop is on her island and she uses the serving board to cover the smoothtop cooktop when she entertains and needs more room for putting food out. Her DH made a cheese board/pastry board out of her sink cutout. She uses both quite a bit.

I think a table top or lazy susan are also great ideas!

Thanks for the tips. LOVE the lazy susan idea! I can put that on my large dining table. I'll probably just place a piece on the counter next to my fridge as a landing spot for pouring drinks etc until I can find a better use!

In my old house I had black marble and I had two huge cutting boards made out of it and they put 4 sides and a bottom and made me a matching oversized utensil holder out of marble..I cannot tell you how many people asked me where I got it!
