How close do you let your plants get before dividing or moving?
Comments (10)I think I would keep it steady at the stage where the individual plants are just touching each other. I am not quite at that point yet as I only started landscaping my house when I bought it three years ago. I have to mulch because of the climate where I live. Many of the plants that keep their foliage around where you live lose all their foliage here and winter is so long and so cold, I wouldn't be able to get away with not mulching (three inches of pine needles). I, too, would only intervene if they really started to threaten each other, blocking out the sun, root competition, etc. But I already have a plan for when they fill in too much. What I intend to do is to place stepping stones in strategic spots that will allow me to stand on them without stepping on plants and without the neighbourhood being aware of my little jungle path. During the summer, the stepping stones will have potted plants on them, which I will only move when I need to step on the stones. This way, the spot where my stepping stone is is always nicely filled and since there is dense vegetation around it, no one can tell there is actually a pot there. Needless to say, the plants that will be in pots will be those that I would need to bring inside for the winter - this might allow me to have calla lilies, gladioli and lilies of the Nile and show them off, too! You know, have your cake and eat it too? If any of the plants planted directly in the soil take over, I can remove some pots around them to let them roam. Does anybody see a problem with my idea? It sounds pretty good to me, but somebody here might see a problem I didn't think of....See MoreDo you sell off furniture before a long-distance move?
Comments (32)Hi again everyone. Just a few thoughts... Lisa I am sorry to have made you add things up! It's exactly what sent me reeling. Making the list and looking at the numbers, all in one shot, was stunning! I am actually very happy about the move, even though the process is difficult. I really love my home here and the way it has turned out. It's been a joy to work on and I am finally feeling pleased with the results. Interestingly, the staging process seemed to seal the deal. A little less furniture and clutter and the place looks "perfect" to me. (To the powers that be, may I please carry this awareness to the next place!) But we have never felt like we fit in here in FL. Going to MA is like going home. Our friends and family are there and the general mentality is a much better fit for us. DD has said repeatedly she wishes we could pick up this house and move it. To some degree, I will recreate certain elements up there...like in the kitchen. As for finding a good mover, we have been referred to someone by our piano dealer. We have a mid-sized grand to store and ship and supposedly this company is the best. (Don't even ask where we're going to fit that thing!) I have seen movers do a hack job. As a confirmed control freak, I'd love to do it myself! But that is ridiculous, of course. We will hire the best and just hope for a positive experience. Nothing we own is without patina anyway. Funny, Hoyamom, I woke up this morning thinking about my grandmother's silver. I think that will go in the car with me. So, if anyone's still reading, do you think I need to offer things at 25% like my realtor suggests? A good friend suggests I start at 40% and work from there. Patina or no, this stuff is only 4-6 years old and it's mostly name brands people would know and recognize. The dining table is the first thing you see on the Ethan Allen website when you do a product search for dining rooms! So, it's still relevant....See MoreDid *you* or are you moving to be close to your kids?
Comments (4)Joanie, I have 3 sisters and Mom and Dad's home has always been the home where we go. From that experience I knew having sons it may be the same for them. It happened and I was prepared for it. We always had the ones near over for Christmas Eve and it worked out fine. You are right about the baby sitting. With us it was also about the loans, every 6 months or so, one out of the 5 kids would hit us up for money because they went shopping on payday then could not pay their bills. We should have move far away but my husband had a hobby and friends that were very important to him so I did not mention it to him....See MoreOut of state move, rent or buy first?
Comments (13)We just moved from suburban Chicago to western NC 8 weeks ago. We'd been house/land hunting for over 2 years, making short tips to look around but didn't find "the one". As you said it's much easier to do the hunting while living in the new area so we are renting here and can take our time. For us, it made more sense to 1) have a year lease with option to extend month to month and 2) rent a house large enough that we did not need a separate storage unit - I want our possessions under our roof and in heated/cooled space. Dollar for dollar it made sense to put the $$ into rent as opposed to storage. We sold a great deal before moving but every closet here is packed with boxes, under the beds, the basement and the garage has items that don't need conditioned space. We are settled, roughly, but comfortably enough. In a perfect world I'd prefer to put the rent $$ into a purchase. But finding the perfect place to purchase is more important to us in the long run. We don't have school age children either, but I'm still somewhat concerned about school districts as they relate to resale. My husband would do as you plan and live within a nat'l forest if I'd agree! We're in for a big compromise which is part of the difficulty in finding the right place for us. Good luck in your search - and if you don't mind sharing, where are you planning to move?...See Moreavg2319
