Just so you know, a ranch house is only one level.

Yes I know, it is just that this style was the only one out here that had a ranch feel to it. Actually we bought when new and it is called the Ranchwood tract! All the other houses out here are stucco with red tile roofs.

Must be that So Cal thing!

It was difficult to really see in the porch area to do the stone you wanted and the door. Maybe a closer pic would help to see that area better. I'm not sure about stone since you have a brick walkway and stairs??

Thanks so much, that is great! I will try to get another pic of the porch area. I think the stacked stone we are thinking of is like 2/3 of the way up, sort of a craftsman look? And that little blue accent on the top I think I will paint the same as the door a cranberry color. Let me see what I can find.

The windows are Jeld Wen and they have the trim on just the top, arrgh the name escapes me.

The railings are going and so is the screen door. We will probably get another nicer screen door, I love the breeze in the evening.

Man, you aren't going to want to hear this but I think the light brown trim is perfect.. and i absolutely love your current door. I think they both fit the house perfectly. Obviously, you'll need to replace the termite infested railings (how did they get to the railings and not the posts?) and I could see adding some flavor to the posts and railings but I would also lean more towards the beautiful red brick over stone.

I agree with funkyart. If you want to do a treatment on the posts part way up, continue the antique brick. Not sure what part of So.Cal. you're in, but there are several stone/brick dealers here that carry used brick. Sepulvada (sp?) comes to my mind specifically. They have a website, too.

The "ranch" style you reference liking seems to be related to the sort of western ranch look, which goes with your current door, your current posts and railings, though the new stacked stones would also be ranch-like. The problem is the stacked stones don't got very well with the brick you've got.

The new windows and doors you've chosen are gorgeous Craftsman style openings, which is also So-Cal. Blending Craftsman with red tiles, etc makes more of California Mission style than rustic ranch style that I think you are referencing with the stacked stones. I would caution you against going in too many directions, only because it could hurt the cohesiveness of your overall look. Which inspires you the most? Can you think of some buildings in your area that you are drawn to?

Your current door is SO pretty! I think if you just focus on redoing the posts and railing in a style that works with the rest, you will be better off. The Spanish Mission style would be a great inspiration for your home, as you have all of the ingredients and it seems to have some of the rustic feeling that you are drawn to.

Thanks guys, it is nice to get others view. The brown is really faded dark brown, hasn't been painted for about 10 years. The front door that is in the pic of the porch is actually a screen door. The door that is a thumbnail is the new one we are getting. The screen is so tattered and worn, ready for a new one.

I actually like the brick as well, but DH talked about the stacked stone. We originally did the planters ourselves 20 years ago and he has always thought they weren't that good! I like them. We do have a low brick wall that seperates our property from the one on the right. It was done by that property PO and wasn't really done right. The owner now is talking about facing it with the stacked stone, that is where we are drawing that from. The posts on the porch do have damage and will be replaced, they are structural, the railings are not. I want to sit on the porch and enjoy the view and they have always hindered that.

I think DH is trying to pull some craftsman details into this redo. Don't know if that will really work, which is why I came to you all!

Who ever can photo shop next can you add brick to the posts instead of the stacked stone?

Well I should have known, DH says it is too green! Why do we always have to prove ourselves! Anyway, this is a link to teddy bear, which I believe is the original color, or one close too it. If anyone gets a chance and wants to change the green to brown, I would appreciate it.

Does the trim on the corners have to be a different color? I am seeing the house looking larger by painting the same. Like the idea of the little patio in front instead of wood closing in.

New member AND a So. Cal "rancher" here. I really, really like the last pic lindy posted.

No idea why the soft green for the body color is so much better than on the trim, but it really is. That one is my favorite by far.

I agree and like it as well, it is just that to paint over the brown trim to white, well that will take much more work and money. DH already nixed that idea. There are a few housed in the tract that have done that already. I will show him the pic though!

I had a feeling that changing the trim to a light color might be hard.....it does look pretty though. Here's the wide shot just in case hubby has a change of heart. I love this color on your house. (changed that big trim piece to the body color)

Lauraella-the last colors that lindybarts photoshopped for you (man I need to learn to do that-it is sooo cool!)are the colors my house is painted. They are SW colors
Baltic Sage-house
Cameo Lace-trim
Rookwood dark Red-window trim

I wanted to do something different to jazz up and decided to trim the window in dark red-almost burgandy. The green is a soft gray-green that changes during the day. Our door is wood but a burgandy door would look great. This is right after closing.

Can you try painting a small section of trim in the off white to see how much work it will be? Some paints today do such a great coverage job-maybe not as bad as you think?

You have done an awesome job. I showed the pic to our contractor and he used it to start doing the brick facing on the new posts. I think we have decided to do a gate in the fence on the right to go into the back yard. May be what we need to get that side yard done.

Do you have the Burgundy color? I need to put that down on my paint proposal form. I will post new pics when the posts are done.

Well found out last night that if we are painting the same colors don't need approval! Yeah, so I don't have to worry about having the neighbors sign. Just need to get so bids to see how much it will cost!
